Hi,

I'm a Canadian 4th year pharmacy student. I was just at a pharmacy career
fair and Walgreens Pharmacy was one of the exibitors. They told me that I
could work in Washington State or Minnesota in their pharmacies without
doing the state equivalancy exam. For some reason, they wouldn't give me an
idea of the amount of money I would be making if I signed up. I'm just
curious if anyone knows what the wages are for pharmacists in these
particular states is, or in the US in general.

Thanks!

You could use the calculator at
http://www.rxsalary.com .

I had never heard of that website, so I tried it to be sure my offer is
appropriate.  I am a 4th year pharmacy student in the southeast US, with a
job offer in the city of my school and my hometown.  The offer for my
hometown is $8,000 more than what rxsalary.com said was the going rate in
that area.  The one for my school city, is $6,000 more than what they said.

I believe it. Right now, we pharmacists are enjoying tremendous wage
growth. It's about time.

I work in the Minneapolis, MN metro area in a hospital.  New grads, no
experience, start at $87,000 and change for staff pharmacists.  We are
probably one of the higher paid hospitals (probably not the highest)
in the area as we just had a salary survey completed and got a very
substantial raise.  You can be assured Walgreens is paying more than
this.  I had one applicant (before our salary survey) turn me down for
a position based on salary.  She stated Snyders was paying her
$98,000.  She was a brand new grad but I think the position at Snyders
was pharmacist in charge (extra responsibilities) but I can't attest
to the veracity of her statement regarding salary.  I'd bet it's not
far from the truth.  CVS is coming into the area soon, I imagine wages
will continue to be somewhat competitive.

CHECKLIST OF REQUIREMENTS FOR CANADIAN PHARMACISTS
OR STUDENTS TO DO IN ORDER TO BECOME LICENSED
AS A PHARMACIST IN THE STATE OF MINNESOTA

The following method of licensure is available to Canadian pharmacists
who graduated from a CCAPP accredited College of Pharmacy in 1993
through June 30, 2004.

IF YOU ARE A GRADUATE OF A COLLEGE OF PHARMACY IN CANADA, WHICH HAS A
CURRICULUM THAT IS TAUGHT IN ENGLISH, YOU WILL NEED TO DO THE
FOLLOWING:

  1.   Submit a letter to the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy, which
outlines your work experience as an intern and as a pharmacist in
Canada.  This letter should be submitted to the Minnesota Board of
Pharmacy as soon as possible, as it will need to go before the Board
of Pharmacy for approval.  The Board of Pharmacy meets approximately
once a month.  If the Board does not approve your internship or work
as a pharmacist in Canada as meeting our internship requirements you
will need to obtain additional internship experience.  Please contact
the Board office for further information regarding internship
requirements.

  2.   Request a packet of information for the Board examinations.

  3.   You must complete all board examination applications and
submit them to the Minnesota Board of Pharmacy with the appropriate
fees, along with all supporting documentation that is required.

  4.   You must pass the Board's practical examination, North
American Pharmacist Licensure Examination (NAPLEX), and Multistate
Pharmacy Jurisprudence Examination (MPJE).

  5.   You must pay the Board of Pharmacy the required Original
Licensure Fee.

  6.   You may then begin working as a pharmacist.
