Getting braces off too early.

Hi,
I hope someone can help me.  I am 45 years old and I've been
wearing braces for nearly two years now.  I have a question but first
before I ask it, I would like to tell you a little more. My experience
with my doctor has not been so favorable. Let me explain. I never had
any harsh words with him but he always made me feel less than
important. After waiting at times for about 30 to 40 minutes ( I'm
usually on my lunch hour), I usually don't even get to see him just
his inept assistant. The times I did see him it would be for ten
minutes tops.

I could go on for 2 pages and tell you how I felt I was not treated
correctly.  But, I won't. I will skip to my last visit.  After waiting
in his office for an hour, he looks at my teeth and after 5 minutes he
tells me to make my another appointment in which he will remove my
braces. My front tooth is still crooked, in fact it goes in front of
my other front tooth. I tell him I would rather keep my braces on till
my tooth is corrected. Oh, let me add that since last month he no
longer receives from me because of my insurance plan, I am all paid
up. He tells me my retainer will correct my front tooth. he says most
of his patients finish their treatment with retainers.  Is this true?
I really don't want to take my braces off until all my teeth are
straight.  Oh yeah, I must add, my 2 bottom teeth are also crooked
which he says the retainer will fix. He also was not going to do
another adjustment until I insisted he did. So he changed the wire on
my uppers.  (He hasn't changed the wire on bottom teeth in 4 months).

Is my doctor trying to rush me?  Should I let him take off my braces
even though I feel its too early.  I usually do not question doctors,
I have a lot of respect for them. You have to understand, I've been
wearing these braces for nearly 2 years and I want my teeth to be
straight.

Should I let him take my braces off or insist he keeps treating me
until they are all straight?

Someone please answer,
Ann

as a general rule, the most effective way to move teeth is with braces and not
retainers.  you understand that there may be exceptions and, I can think of
exceptions in my own practice, but braces are generally the way to go.

I think you should call the office and explain to the secretary just what you
have written here and go on to ask for either a phone consultation and an in
person consultation to explain directly to the doc what your worries are.
straightening teeth is not all that hard (getting them to fit is hard) and it
sounds as if you need a little more time in braces

if you are not satisfied with the answers you get, please feel free to seek a
second opinion from another doc.

Bad sign! I make all patients feel like they are really something.

PATIENT: Doctor, can you guess how old I will be next week?

ME: Uhhhhh, fifty? (Lady looks like eighty).

PATIENT: Ahhh, doctor, I will be eighty next Monday.

ME: Darn! You do not look a day over 79.
