Is there a drug (or other treatment) which can cause the patient's skin to produce more UV-resistant pigment? On the same topic, what skin pigments are needed to block dangerous UV - is it just melanin or are there others?

My father has chronic back pain and recently got a prescription for Duragesic. The 50mg made him very sick (vomiting). The 25mg still made him sick, but to a lesser extent. His pain has subsided but he wants to sleep all the time and still has an upset stomach.

I hope you can help ease my mind a bit. In today's society, I know that it is normal for doctors to push pills for every little problem. In my mom's case, I feel she takes too many, but I could be looking at this the wrong way. I am not sure.
