Appendicitis / oxidative stress10 Jun 2006 17:22 GMT1
This would give credence to Dr. Sullivan's thirty year old  observation
.. iron stores are reflected .. many times .. by the appearance of
appendicitis.
Plasma total anti-oxidant capacity correlates inversely with the extent

Intubating newborns?10 Jun 2006 04:27 GMT1
I've never read or posted on this group before, but I'm hoping someone
can answer a quick question for me.
Could intubating a newborn to "clear him out" if he sounds a little
gurgly after birth ultimately damage his trachea?  I had a baby one
Relationship between sarcoidosis and hypercalcemia10 Jun 2006 01:16 GMT4
This is a short question, but I am wondering why there is hypercalcemia
in patients with sarcoidosis?  What is the underlying physiological
mechanism?  Thanks.

anatomy: "willow of the brain" ?09 Jun 2006 17:23 GMT2
A friend has been diagnosed with an aneurism in, if I heard it right,
the "willow of the brain." Things are rather confused right now and I
could have misunderstood - perhaps they said "the willow of <garble>."
Any clues? Thanks in advance.
Prolonged Fever09 Jun 2006 10:10 GMT9
My cousin sister, 34, is suffering from fever for the last one month.
She was hospitalized for almost two weeks and went through all sort of
tests which yielded no great clues to the cause. Please find below the
abstract of HAEMATOLOGY reports of tests conducted over a period of
Itchy palate (back of roof of mouth)09 Jun 2006 07:35 GMT2
I sometimes get an itchy palate near the back of the roof of the mouth.
Lately I will get this feeling for 1-5 minutes for no apparent reason.
Then 1-2 hours will go by and I'll be fine.  Does this mean I have an
allergy?  Or is it a manifestation of a common cold?
Shingles vaccine09 Jun 2006 07:22 GMT1
The FDA has approved a new vaccine to reduce the risk of shingles in
older Americans. In a study of about 38 thousand people, the new
vaccine "zostavax" was found to reduce the incidence of shingles by at
least half in people over age 60. Researchers say patients who received
When did the measles vaccine appear09 Jun 2006 04:52 GMT4
Here in Boston we've had a measles outbreak (~10 cases in or near the John Hancock)
It got me wondering -- I was born 1944 and have not had the measles. I'm guessing
that I wasn't vaccinated because I think the vaccine came out in the early 60's
Is that right?

Foot pain08 Jun 2006 02:26 GMT3
On Friday (after a minor household emergency) I noticed a pain in the main
joint of my left big toe.  Saturday I could move despite the pain, but Sunday
it began to hurt like a stab would  on the side of the joint. It responded to
ibuprofen but not always. It tends to  be better ...

Swelling while on a cruise07 Jun 2006 07:58 GMT24
When I went on a recent cruise my feet/ankles swelled up quite a bit.
I drank plenty of water, walked a lot and elevated my feet often but
it didn't seem to help.  By the end of the week it almost hurt to
walk.  What can I do to prevent this from happening again on my next
