Two blood sugar readings illustrate the problem: 180 and 40 average out to 110. While two readings of 110 may be OK, the 180 and the 40 are not OK. We have to pay attention to our blood glucose variability as measured by standard deviation in addition to looking at averages.

Just to add a bit that could be useful to someone. I have four acres to mow. After I rose I could only add a couple units of insulin and still went out to mow. After 1/2 acre my arm were so weak I had to quit.
