Can you have an abcess with no pain, i.e., just a small bump low down in the gum below the tooth, with some very minor sensitivity? Does having an abcess mean a root canal is required? Thanks!

I'm looking for something that will seal a tooth - not only on the surface, but as far down towards the root as possible - at least on the sides. I see that sealants are usually used on the top surfaces. Are they not suitable for the sides - or is there anything that could seal
