Why may dentists sometimes "split or crack" a tooth during an extraction? A
friend recently had a wisdom tooth out and told me that he felt sure the tooth
was split in some way (intentionally, by the dentist), before being extracted.

I have not seen a dentist in a couple of years.  The last several times I
went to a dentist the x-rays were brutal - my mouth is small and the
technicians had to wrench my jaw open to fit the x-ray cards in.  Now I'm
shopping around for a new dentist and I really want to avoid ...

The answer is both. A root canal is done when the decay is at or clos
to the nerve. The nerve becomes hypersensitive (hyperemia), or at
later stage becomes necrotic. Necrosis means "death." The nerve die

2- See if the gum recession is causing sensitivity on the
tooth behind (from what you describe, I do not think this is it.)
