off topic - sharing a family favorite recipe :-)18 Aug 2006 19:47 GMT5
I thought I'd share a nice recipe here.  This is my grandmother's recipe for
German style potato salad.  It is always a big favorite, and I had to type
it up for some family members anyway :-)    Enjoy.

Adjustment period?17 Aug 2006 23:59 GMT9
Mom has been in her group home for just three days now.  Apparently she
was pretty good yesterday -- still confused, and pretty heavily drugged,
but seemed to be making friends with other residents, and giving and
getting a lot of hugs.  But today she's back to being angry, and ...
Alzheimer's Logic17 Aug 2006 21:11 GMT9
I've learned about my mother that while she says things that make no
sense, there is often some sort of obscure logic in her mind.  For
instance, she's fascinated by her gray hair, because she's sure she's
too young to be gray.  (Hell, I'm 47 and I've been all gray since 40 or
Introduction and help17 Aug 2006 05:31 GMT12
I've been a lurker in this group for awhile now and decided I needed to
introduce myself and hope to get some advice. I can see that this is a
very supportive group and I'm glad I'm now a part of it. This may end
up being very long. I'm sorry to have you read so much but I feel I'm
Daycare Dilemma16 Aug 2006 21:39 GMT63
Today was dad's first try at daycare.  It did not go well.  He got very
agitated, spent an hour going from door to door trying to get out,  wanted
to go home, and refused to participate in any of the activities. He was
upsetting the other patients there on the end of it. They ...

Mom Update and a heads-up15 Aug 2006 11:08 GMT5
My mother has now been moved from Alverado Medical Center in San Diego
to a small group home solely for Alzheimer's patients -- six residents,
with two caregivers round-the-clock, a gerontologist on call who does
housecalls, so no need for going out to doctors, and a hospice ...

"The Truth About the Drug Companies" - long and possibly off-topic15 Aug 2006 05:17 GMT44
I have just finished a book called _The Truth About the Drug
Companies_ by Dr. Marcia Angell, former executive editor of the
New England Journal of Medicine.
This book made me very angry.  What follows may appear to be an
Finally some possible good news15 Aug 2006 04:09 GMT5
My sister saw our Mom today at the mental hospital.  Mom was having a
brain CAT scan, and she's always been claustrophobic.  Kim had told them
they'd either have to drug her into oblivion, or have someone *very*
reassuring there.  They did have Mom on anxiolytics to the point ...

My truly horrific weekend12 Aug 2006 06:28 GMT13
The last few days have been, without a doubt, the most difficult, most
heart-wrenching, most painful of my entire life.  My sister called early
Saturday afternoon, panicked at the notion of having to get Mom into the
lockdown facility by herself.  I told her to hang on, I'd catch ...
