Here's the scoop...There are 4, FDA approved "alpha blockers": Terazosin,
1993, ("Hytrin"), Doxazosin, 1995, ("CARDURA"), Tamsulosin, 1997,
("FLOMAX"), and Alfuzosin, 2003("UROXATROL"). Your Saw Palmetto works on a
different principle than the above urinary channel relaxants. Saw is
supposed to reduce the amount of DHT which comes from testosterone...[My
opinion? I think Saw Palmetto is bullshit. I carefully experimented with
it and could not notice any effect when my BPH was rather serious. In
fact, I think it even worsened my BPH symptoms!!]...In your case...Saw
Palmetto may not be working either because your BPH is too advanced, if it
is just BPH and not prostatitis...Saw might work in mild cases, but you may
need something more. One more point. Not all Saw Palmetto is created
equally. You may need to try a different brand, but likely it just won't
work because of the stage of advanced of your BPH. If it is Prostatitis
that you suffer from, then DHT blockers are not going to ever help much.
Theory says that it's either Prostatitis or, once Prostatitis is completely
ruled out, then it may be the DHT that tends to sensitize prostate cells
into growing. There is nothing special about taking Terazosin over any
other alpha blocker. You may get a slightly better reaction from one of
the more recently approved drugs versus the original, but maybe not. Many
of us had to try a few different ones before we were satisfied with the
results. Even then, in my case, I had side effects that just was not worth
staying on the drug. Regardless, urinary channel relaxants are only a
temporary symptom reliever. It does nothing for the size of the prostate
which will keep on growing till you either have an operation or spend more
than 6 months taking the FDA-approved, DHT inhibitors: Finasteride, 1992,
("PROSCAR"), or Dutasteride, 2001, ("AVORDART"). If you take these FDA
approved, DHT inhibitors, you will likely have to continue to take them for
years and years...and maybe forever.
If your symptoms are as pressing as you say, then my opinion is you need to
revisit your doctor right away, or, if you have just seen you doctor and
told him about your symptoms, then I feel it safe to say that your doctor is
a dummy! If it is the latter scenario, then go get another urologist who
knows what he is doing, and do it soon. At the very least he should have
offered to put you on a combination therapy of Alpha Blocker and DHT
inhibitor. Study after study indicates the efficacy of allowing the
urinary channel to relax while the months of drugging yourself with the DHT
inhibitors have time to kick in...could be as much as a year or more, then
to keep taking both for almost forever. Nonetheless, don't confuse
efficacy of the combo drug therapy with freedom from potential side
effects--be careful and learn about the side effects before you take the
stuff.
On the other hand, if you have prostatitis, your doctor needs to find out
what is causing it...what bacteria specifically... and then to put you and
your sex partner on it for many, many months....maybe 6 or more, depending
on the bacteria. Try to avoid self-catheterization. Though the urinary
channel is already full of bacteria, the last thing you need is to introduce
more into that region.

I believe that's Hytrin and yes many have used it as described. It had some
side effects , however, so other similar products like Cordura and
Flomax gained greater acceptance. Jim W.
Once again the pain and "urgency" associated with my enlarged prostate has
flared up big time... Currently doing major Cipro to clobber any bacterial
infection; indeed the flare-up usually subsides somewhat with this
anti-biotic. (But I'd like to meet the idiot that says you need 3 to 4
glasses of water with each Cipro tablet...) The very specific pain in the
prostate and bladder always leads me to the Dr for anti-biotics.
But... The urgency has got to the frantic stage (almost embarrassing
sometimes -- only one instance of leakage). The difficulty relaxing-to-pee
and the intensity of the urethra/glans pain has got beyond "manageable" -- I
wish I was brave enough to self-catheterize, In the past three weeks I
have tripled my Saw Palmetto and Lycopene intake with no obvious
improvement.
So all that preamble just to ask if any of you fellas have tried TERAZOSIN?

decrease outflow obstruction. It is also effective in easing BPH-related
symptoms by preventing stimulation of adrenergic receptors and consequent
smooth muscle contractions in the bladder and prostatic urethra. Urodynamic
improvement may help reduce urinary tract infection.
