Re: Synthroid

Beverley26 Jun 2006 18:23
I guess it is all a moot point now. I tried the brand Synthroid at the
lowest does they make and cut the pill in half. Thought I'd wind up in the
ER last night as my heart was pounding so bad. So this morning I took
nothing. I still feel a little jittery but not too bad. I guess he'll try
another brand on me - I almost wish he wouldn't as I'm scared now to take
anything. Maybe the cure is worse than the problem?

Bev,
I took the generic version for over a year and kept having problems with my
heart doing flip flops, palpitations, etc. Finally went to a real Endo
doctor and he said that generic thyroid was not good and firmly believed in
the brand name Synthroid. So he switched me to that and I think the
pharmacist thought I was crazy because I did not want the generic. But low
and behold my heart problems stopped and I am even taking a higher dose than
I was taking in the generic. Must be something to what the doc was talking
about. Sure is nice not to listen to your heart pound when you are trying to
sleep. It took me going to a specialist before I could get the right answer.
He also said that soy products, antacids, calcium supplements and grapefruit
can keep the synthroid from working right. You can take or eat those things
but not when you take your medicine. I have to take it with a glass of water
when I first get up then eat something an hour later. I am wondering if
there is something else in the generic version that is giving people
problems. The reason the doc said he does not like to use the generic is the
way the FDA tests medicines. He said they will give the generic version to a
healthy person and then only test it for 24 hours. Synthroid does not give
you a result in a persons blood until months later. Way to go FDA!

That's my 2 cents.

Pharmacy said I was getting wayyyy too much synthroid for my system. Said my
reaction was pretty typical - that feeling of too much caffeine. Since 25mcg
is the lowest and I had already tried cutting the dose in half then the next
step was to call the doc and find another Rx. Pharmacy said there are
several alternative Rx's available. So now I've talked to my doctor's nurse
and she's going to get back with me. I guess they are going to try something
else and call it in for me.

Bev
please do me a favor and call the doc friday.  Don't mess with dosage
yourself.  I know he mentioned you to jiggle the dose or play with it, but
hon that is not the thing to do.  Thyroid takes awhile to get adjusted in
your body and skipping here and there and lowering here and there is not
going to give you a true level for you to use.

That is why they put you on a higher or lower dosage and wait for 3 to 6
months before another blood test is done.

If you are feeling itchy by all means call that doc frid.

The synthroid or levo something or other, can't remember generic, if the
dose os 25mcg it must be actually .25mcg   Right????    I am on .125mcg
That is micrograms cause the .15mcg was too too much.  Is it .25mcg???
When I got too much the .15 I got the shakes due to too much.
Please call the doc and if soy is mixed with thryoid that is a no no. Drink
the water with it and try your coffee black haha.  Or at least skim milk..in
it for now.
PLEASE?  call the doc............
It also sounds like you might not be getting enough with dry mouth as well
as the itch and that is due to dry skin.  With thyroid problems that is very
possible, till you get the right dosage...........

so it could be either too much or too little. Check that bottle, what color
is the pill?  blue, beige, white, coral?  Read the dots haha

Well the first couple of days I really began to feel great with lots of
energy. I was thinking that I was approaching feeling like a normal person
except for a few joints that still were not working well (they really need
some major lubrication!) . Except for the funny tingling itchy sensation
that almost seemed to worsen with each day. Then I noticed that my anxiety
levels were rising. Now for the last two days or so I've had a headache and
nausea. So yesterday I decided to cut my pill in half - because it was
scored and he had said something about playing with the dosage. I'm on 25mcg
and I'm splitting that in half. I think tomorrow I will just not take it and
see how I feel. Yes, I'm taking it on an empty tummy first thing in the
morning with just my coffee which I was told was perfectly OK to drink my
coffee. But I just thought of something - I use Coffeemate (brand, used
instead of cream/milk) in my coffee and it has soybean oil in it. There is a
warning about giving this med to children using soybean formula. Anyway I
hardly ever eat breakfast and I don't bother taking anything else until I do
eat something a few hours later.

Shakiness - yes, that would almost describe my anxiety - it's as if I'm
really nervous about something but I'm not yet my body thinks I am.

I don't remember what my levels were - I guess I should have asked for a
copy. But I was just slightly elevated (meaning the thyroid was a just tiny
bit sluggish).

I wonder if the Coffeemate is making a difference?

I have no appetite. I ate something about 2:30 today and have no desire for
dinner tonight - in fact I had my husband heat something in the microwave
for his dinner because I thought that even the smell of food would make me
vomit.

I'm just thirsty but then I'm always running around with a dry mouth.

Oh Janers you are so helpful - I'll bet the dosage is  too much and the
Coffeemate is interfering too.

I'm not itchy as in hives or anything that would pose a life threatening
situation - at least not at this point in time. It's just if I touch
something I set up this sensation. I think it hits my hands first because
I'm handling my pill box and my coffee, then I strand up and walk - toes,
rub my eyes or touch my nose - itch! Brush my hair and I want to scratch my
scalp with the brush not brush my hair. Then it seems to go away. I noticed
on the weekends I wake up and take my pill and climb back into bed. I'm
supposed to take it at the same time every day. My hands might start to itch
but I fall asleep and when I wake up I don't have the problem.

Also by the end of the day I feel better than the morning. I think I'll call
the doc on Monday and see what happens if I don't take it tomorrow, and then
only take a half pill on Sat and not drink any Coffeemate in my coffee, and
then skip Sunday. Hmmmm.

Hi Bev, might be the generic but is might also be the amount that is in it.
I suggest asking doc for a script that says DAW or dispense as written and
write synthroid.
I am on synthroid and well that hppened to me getting generic.  Found that I
also needed a smaller doseage.  I am still on generic so who knows this.

the anxiety might be due to worrying about this also but if you have the
shakiness that can be too much thyroid.

What is the dose and what was your TSH as well as T4 and T7?

check your bp too, that is all into this.
do you take it morning and ON an empty tummy? I was told a must to do

let me know,

Doc gave me a Rx for Synthroid which was filled with a generic. I'm not sure
if I should just wait through the side effects or call the doc and ask for a
new Rx. The printout that comes with it says that side effects tend to
subside over time. Within seconds of taking it I get itchy. No rash just an
itchiness on the extremities (fingers, toes, nose, ears and scalp) for about
an hour, then later on my whole body tends to feel a little itchy. Also it
seems my anxiety levels have increased. And I've also had some dizziness.
But I feel much better, lots more energy and in general I feel better
but...... What the heck is happening?
