Peroxide is no panacea. The peroxide guy, Paul Keyes came up with the technique that used peroxide and baking soda, and advocated careful brushing under the gumline with this slurry. If you could get this paste to the base of the periodontal pockets to clean out the plaque (the oxygenating action of the peroxide presumably was intended to perhaps diminish anaerobic bacterial activity), you could improve perio health and decrease the need for perio surgery. That's a big if though, and I've seen little to support the superiority of peroxide as an antimicrobial. A much better antimicrobial is chlorhexidene gluconate, but it requires a prescription and has some annoying side effects with long term use.

Will using a rinse than contains peroxide 2 or 3 times a day as well as brushing keep my gums healthy? Is a peroxide based product better than Listerine for preventative use? Thank you.
