I need guidance/info/advice/ideas etc. etc on a portable system that can be
used around the home for tasks such as reding letters or magazines, hobbies,
simple repair tasks and the like.

what camera/lens combo, what to use for a screen, how large a (12v?) battrey
to power it all?

Where do I start? (!)

The standard for portability and light weight is a plastic fresnel lens:

http://scientificsonline.com/search.asp?t=ss&ss=fresnel&x=11&y=9

If you have sufficient light, they require no electricity at all.  If
you don't have enough light, just turn on a house light.

Be sure to click all the links to see low vision aids and lenses mounted
on stands (some have lights built in).

I carried the US$1.95 lens around everywhere with me.  It came in a
plastic sleeve to protect from scratches, and it fit in my pocket
calendar that I carried in my shirt pocket.  Since then, due to age and
cataract surgery, I have become totally dependent on reading glasses, I
carry at least one pair at all times (outside of the house, in the house
I keep a pair by the computer and another pair next to the couch where I
read), and sometimes as many as three.

With the price of fresnel lenses, you can afford to try these, and if
they don't work for you, you haven't lost much.

Have you tried plain old OTC reading glasses?  They don't work for some
kinds of low vision, but they are ideal for me.  Some people buy them at
the dollar store!  If they work, but you don't like the frames, you can
upgrade to the "expensive" ones (generally under US$15).  If you have
other problems, like astigmatism or you need different powers for each
eye, then any eye doctor will be happy to sell you prescription glasses
that will fit both your eyes and your face perfectly.

A fresnel lens degrades contrast significantly.  This would be a big
problem for someone with low vision.  Also, magnification would not be
enough.

You really need to consult a low vision centre who will have many
different ready made devices available to demonstrate for you.   Which
one depends on the nature of your vision loss.

Building your own CCTV does not make sense, there are good low cost
systems available and you may qualify for government subsidy on the
cost.

Husband tried making one for his mom.  The big problem is how to move
the reading material so that you can read normally.  Some sort of
mechanism to move stuff smoothly from left to right and then CR to the
beginning of the next line.  Without that it's useless.

No offence Frank, but how can the price of these devices be justified?

e.g. your *Journey*:

http://www.independentliving.com/prodinfo.asp?number=999857DS

This is around 1600 pounds sterling (I am in the UK)

WOW

Don't feel picked on BTW, all the commercially available units that I can
find online seem to be overpriced by a factors of 2x or 3x

This is precisely why I want to go down the DIY route (with some help from
normally sighted friends).

Exactly right.  Suitable cameras, monitors and computers are dirt cheap
-- if you're lucky you can retrieve them from somebody else's garbage!
The problem is the indexing table.  Something appropriate might be
constructed from a drafting table and the thingy that clamps onto it
that allows you to draw parallel lines etc.

My MIL wrote her grocery lists in 2" letters, but if your vision isn't
that bad you might not need to move the reading material around much at
all, obviating the problem.

Good luck!

I just tried writing 11 figure phone numbers down and re-reading them fast
enough to dial without serious pausing.
I needed  30 mm minimum height, so while not _quite_ as bad as 2  inches (51
mm) .....!
It is easier to keep phone numbers on the computer of course, one can scroll
a cell of Excel (containing the number) to fill the width of the screen,
which is a 26 inch LCD tv in my case <g>!

Yes, the indexing table _is_ a problem, from a design point of view, but not
the be all and end all.

My guess would be "small market".  Same as the problem with orphan
drugs.  Not that that justifies it, of course.
