Non-Preserved Saline

Hard to find these days. Used to be much more available, both in the 12 oz
aerosol cans, and the boxes of 3 4 oz. plastic squeeze bottles.

I used to buy the aerosol cans at Walmart, but now they have discontinued
it. I don't see it in any stores. The only places I could find online were
like $9 a can! (Walmart last had it at $2.34 per can).

Well, I finally found a new source (from someone's blog online), so I guess
I should share it here, as others are probably searching for the stuff.

Call 1-800-Blairex (1-800-252-4739) to buy the 12 oz cans directly from the
manufacturer. The price is $2.82 per can, minimum order of six. If your
order is over $50, then shipping is free.

(Interesting. It's that Blairex brand that sells retail online for something
like $9 a can!)

Besides using it in cleaning contacts, I use it directly in my eyes to wash
them out, both with and without contacts on. I also sometimes use it to wash
out my nose and sinuses. So, I'm glad I found another source.

I have seen the boxes of 3 4 oz. plastic bottles of non-preserved saline at
Long's drugstore (their own brand) lately for $5.99 per box (also 12 oz.)

The closest thing otherwise is Ciba Softwear Saline. It is preserved, but a
different way than other preserved saline. It feels to the eye like
non-preserved. I found a source for that online for $2.99 per 12 oz bottle,
much cheaper than through other retailers. I forget the URL though. I can
look it up. (It was found on Froogle (Google shopping), so you can probably
find that source as well.

Unpreserved saline should not be used for cleaning or storing
contacts; it should only be used for rinsing.  Cleaning should be done
by rubbing with a multi purpose or cleaning solution; storage should
be in disinfecting, multi purpose or a hydrogen peroxide based
solution.
