Last week I got fitted for RGPs and paid $190 for custom cut lenses
(including taxes and insurance).  Several years ago I lost a lens
while windsurfing so I'm thinking about getting some soft lenses from
one of the mail order places for use in situations where there is an
elevated chance of losing or scratching one.  Is this a good idea?
After a soft lens is worn once, can it be safely stored in
disinfecting solution for several months then reused?

Why not use a disposable (daily) softlens if possible?
Less chances to infect/damage your eyes.

Best to do that with your doctor's help.

If you need GP, it's likely your vision may not be as good with simple soft
lenses. Sometimes it's totally unsatisfactory, but often it's plenty good
for seeing a stump in the water when you ski.

I don't recommend letting lenses sit around in solution for a month or more.
If you're going to do that, get one-day lenses and throw them away after
use. In most cases, the prescription can be compromised a little in order to
make them the same left and right so you can order one power only.
