I recently ordered glasses. The precription is

OD   +4.50   -0.50   x078
OS   +4.00   -0.75   x099
Add  +2.25

I got regular varilux, transitions. The shop says they will be really think
and tried to sell me thinner ones, which I just can not afford right now. I
have a copy of the prescription so I can always order another pair later.
But I am wondering, just how think will these be?

Thanks
Sandie

Sandie,

Short answer- about 10% to 20% thicker.

Longer answer- there are many ways to make thinner lenses, as opposed to just
selling you the "thinner ones".  The thickness (and weight) of the lens is much
more dependant on the size and shape of the lens/frame, the type of bevel
(rimless is thicker in your Rx), lens design; ie, base curve/asphericity and
prism thinning, than by the index of refraction of the lens material alone.

So, with your Rx, you won't see too much difference in appearance between
regular plastic and a moderately high index lens like polycarbonate, about 10%,
if the only difference is the lens material. There may be a noticeable
difference in weight though, which usually gives me more concern than the lens
thickness.

Hope this helps,

Thanks Robert,

High index is what they tried to (up)sell me.

I got metal frames that are pretty small. My top 2 choices were a plastic
and a metal frame. They said the metal frame would work better with the
thickness of the lens. All my other choices, they said were too small. I
think because they are bifocals.

Sounds like they might not be too bad. And like I said I can order another
pair later if I still want to.

Thanks again,
Sandie
