Restasis Review

There seems to be some interest in personal experiences with the new
drug Restasis, so I'll share mine.  For about three years, I've been
suffering from dry eye and meibomitis (dysfunctional oil glands near
the eyelashes).  I've had an absolutely miserable time of it.  But
Restasis has been a huge help.

Here's a bit of pre-Restasis background: For the dry eye, I had
punctum plugs inserted in both lower ducts and I used
preservative-free drops every hour or so.  For the meibomitis, I was
given doxycycline (100 mg/day) and I hot-packed my lids several times
a day.  Even with this treatment combination, I was still suffering
from dry eye and visibly inflamed oil glands (they looked like tiny
white bumps above the lash line).  I also had some general eyelid
inflammation due to all of the irritation that both of these
conditions cause.

I started on Restasis about 2 months ago, and I am thrilled with the
results. The eyelid and oil-gland inflammation has already been
noticeably reduced, and my tear production feels much more normal.
Every week, my eyes get better.  That said, it took several weeks
before I noticed _any_ difference.   The drops have a gradual
effect--I've read that it can take anywhere from 3 to 6 months for the
full effect to be felt--so it requires patience and commitment.

I have to use the Restasis drops every morning and night, and they're
expensive, but they're very, very worthwhile.  The only negative
side-effect that I've experienced is a burning sensation when I
instill the drops.  That sensation goes away after several minutes.

Right now, my insurance covers 80 percent of the cost (a 30-day supply
is $100), but I would willingly pay the full price for the amount of
relief the drops have given me.

life for a cause, battling against fate, during many years of
magnificent struggle, when the unending disappointment finally broke in
hopeless despair. His torch is still burning. There will come some other
battler, who is fit, and will hold it high until the people who are
sitting in darkness have seen its great light."

Thanks for posting your experience.  This should be of interest to many
people, including those who have had LASIK and suffer from dry eye.

Haubrey,

Thanks for your post.  I've been looking for other people who are
using Restasis, to see if they're having a positive response to the
treatment.

I've been experiencing dry eyes and redness for the last few years.
Over the last year, I've had plugs installed in the lower ducts, and
started tetracycline, then doxycycline.  I've also started taking
flaxseed, and cod liver oil, Hydroeyes, and Theratears capsules.  My
eyes seemed to feel better, but not consistently, so my doctor
recently prescribed Restasis, and I've been on it for about 10 days
now.  So far, I've noticed a very small improvement in my eyes in the
morning (less redness), and I'm hoping this effect will continue and
help clear up the redness I've been experiencing.  The only side
effect, so far is stinging after application, which seems to linger
"on and off" for a few hours after using the drops (morning and
night).

Good luck with your treatment, and keep everyone posted...

So glad to read your post!!!  Hope you are still on other end of this e-
mail address. Sounds like I have a very similar situation to yours or your
situation in the past.  Have meibomitis.  Am in miserable pain...level 10
kind of pain.   Just living to get some relief.  Was so glad to read your
post.  Have just gotten a prescription for restasis.

I am looking for that continued ray of hope... do you know what % of folks
were helped in study or do you know of others with meibomitis who have been
helped by this eye product?  Do you know if it helps majority of folk with
meibomitis?  Does it help because it reduces the inflammtion... but aren't
the tears still like toothpaste? Do you think it will give you relief the
rest of your life?  Not a cure.  A 32 vail cost about $100 here, but I
think this is only a 16 day supply?  Do you throw the vial away after using
once or can one save it for 12 hours later at the night time dose?  I
called allergan and they said it has no perservative in it, but one could
do what they wanted... so maybe using same vial twice is not a good
idea..but maybe it is ok if put in a sealed container?  Anyway... how do
you handle the dosing?

How much relief have you gotten now and has it been sustained relief?  At
time of your post in 2003 you said your eyes were much better after a few
weeks? May I ask how much better after a few weeks as I am in that
desperate place?

Any info is much appreciated, as I have not been able to find anyone else
on internet who talks about their problem with meibomitis and success with
restasis.

Thanks more than you know... but it sounds like you may know!     Jeannie
Gammon... from Dallas, Texas
