Is the life of a monthly contact lens determined by how much it is worn?  For
example, if I have a pair of monthlies and I only wear them 3-4 times in a
month do I really have to throw them away at the end of the month?
Thanks

Talk to your eye doctor, but *in general*, a monthly lens is designed
for 30 days of daily (or continuous in some cases) wear.  So, if you
wear them everyday while you are awake, trash them after 30 days.

If you wear them only once a week only max, then your eye doctor may
say trashing them every six months might be ok.  Also be aware that if
you don't wear them at least once a week, then lenses might not be
properly disinfected (especially if you use a multipurpose solution)
when you try and wear them.

Bottom line:  Only your eye doctor can tell you for sure.

Most Optoms will not commit to tell you that monthly DP contacts can be wore
for how long more than the recommended 30days.
Sensible wearers will not use the monthly DP for more than 2 months even
they were used for only 1-2 days / week.

The longer you stretched your dollars for using them for longer period, the
higher the risk of having eye complication.

I will.

As a blanket statement, that is nonsense.

What is the rationale for replacing "monthly" (30 day) frequent
replacement lenses after 2 months if they are only worn one time a
week (therefore, wearing them less than 10 times total) if they are
cared for properly?

The assumption is they're cared for properly.

If you assume they sit on a dusty bathroom shelf, or in the sun, or a hot
car, or they rattle around in the bottom of a purse, it's more realistic.

If you only wear CLs 3-4 times a month, maybe you should look into 1 day
lenses. They would be cheaper over the long haul.

Maintaining monthly lenses over such a schedule as yours is possible, but
unlikely to be followed. I'd look into daily disposable lenses and save
yourself alot of  worry and maintainance.
