I have a moderate astigmatism in one eye that I've been thinking about getting fixed w/ lasik. Last week I saw an ad through my medical group plan for getting lasik at a reduced price. It was from "LasikPlus". They advertised lasik for $700 per eye. I went in for an assessment. They told me it would be $1400 instead of $700 becasue the astigmatism I wanted corrected was over "1" (it's 1.25). Am I correct in interpreting this as a bait and switch, or is it really common for them to double the price in a situation like this? Yes and yes. Hardly anybody qualifies for the lowest prices in these LASIK chain operations and these people probably shouldn't have LASIK anyway because their vision is pretty good to begin with. Avoid "bottom of the barrell" refractive surgery mills that compete solely based on price. These places can't compete as far as quality against places like TLC. Think of it this way: If you wanted to get your eyes checked, you wouldn't go into a WalMart would you? If you have astigmatism that's correctable with glasses,you better not risk it. Astigmatism after lasik is generally irregular,which glasses won't correct. There's a hundred other reasons to avoid this surgery like the plague. They can creat worse problems than you have and when they do,they have no way to repair the damage many times. You would likely have dry eyes like you've never known because of your corneal nerves being cut. Your corneas will definately be weakened,many have ectasia. You don't want these problems! Research it yourself and never trust somebody whos looking to sell you something,they have one thing in mind. Look into it and then,don't do it. Best of luck. Not really bait and switch, but it is common practice for the low price advertisers. They may also charge extra for things like laser flap and custom ablation. The higher priced places generally have one price that includes most powers and the upgraded procedures. In any case, using price as a criterion is not a good idea when shopping for a surgeon. Ask your primary care doctor or eye doctor to recommend a surgeon, ask for references, ask for stats. The above spammer is a well known attacker of lasik casualties,probably on the payroll of opthalmology or involved with lasik sales. Don't trust a salesman. Do your own research,then be glad your vision wasn't wrecked by cutting your corneas then cooking with a laser. This dangerous surgery is sold like a haircut to close the deal. It is not a haircut! I believe that if you consult an attorney you will be told that so long as the advertised price is actually available, it is not truly bait-and-switch. The restrictions may be severe, but there may actually be a few patients who fall within the narrow qualifications for the low, low price.
