99% Misunderstanding

A big attack on Mike Tyner has been launched by Otis.  This is what
happened:

Otis said somewhere that 99% of the population is not interested in
myopia prevention.

Mike responded:  What are you talking about, Otis?  There is no 99% of
the population that might even be interested in the subject, since the
rate of myopia in the general population (assuming we are not dealing
with university students in Singapore) is not 99% but much smaller --
generally it's about 20% - 30%.

Actually, Mike didn't write it exactly this way.  Instead, he was
brief and stated only that "99% of the population is not myopic."

This was clear to me and to anybody who bothered to think about it for
a second, but not to Otis.  Otis chose to interpret Mike's short
comment as suggesting that 99% is not myopic, meaning that only 1% is,
and follow it by a global attack here and multiple messages on his
yahoo group.

Anybody who has read Mike Tyner's many informative posts knows that
Mike could not have meant it the way Otis decided to read it.  Mike
certainly is well informed and wouldn't suggest that only 1% of the
general population is myopic whereas the other 99% is not.

I just wanted to set the record straight and say to Otis:  Cut it out,
go back to play with testes!
Zetsu - 19 Sep 2007 20:59 GMT
It did sounded a bit ambiguous.

I wasn't sure at first, and misinterpreted '99% is not'.

Umm Ms.Brainy can you help me with some maths h/w, please.
I'm really stucked.

Sorry.  Rishi Giovanni Gatti (Zetsu), Lena102938, and Otis Brown are
trolls who haunt s.m.v.

Rishi has published, and is trying to sell worthless books.

Otis is pathologically dishonest and actually hurts people.
Following his advice can induce double vision in those
not working closely with an eye doctor.

Lena102938 uses anti-eye doctor rhetoric as a substitute for ANY
actual information.  It seems she now has to wear glasses and has
developed a pathological (and ILLOGICAL) resentment toward the
industry that "foisted these glasses upon her."

You'd do well to ignore them and wait for responses from the
caring, compassionate eye doctors who DO also participate in this site.

When the basic issues, on which the gosub routine is predicated,
change, then the gosub routine will change, too.

Understand?

I read it probably twice before I've understood myopia distribution
among population which Mike wrote about.

His posts are not without sense of humor.

I would like you to expound upon this point a little more.

Dear Brainy,

Subject: My correct statement, that very few people have
sufficient interest -- to do anything for PREVENTION.

Re:  Perhaps 1 in 100 MIGHT have that motivation.

Re: Mike's flipant remark, that 99 percent are
not nearsighed.

Here Dr. Judy suggests the percentage is 2.5 percent.

MikeOD> 99% of the population does not have myopia.

Judy>  WHO estimates 150 million people in the world have significant
refractive error (myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism combined)

Judy>  150 million out of 6 billion is about 2.5%. If myopes are half
of
them, then Mike is not far wrong; 98.5% of the world is not myopic.

http://www.who.int/mediacentre/news/releases/2006/pr55/en/

Otis> Most of you know that 88 percent of the Hong Kong
students (entering the University) are myopic.

Most people in the world are not Hong Kong university students.

Judy

================

So now depends on WHO selectively reports their statistics.

Best,

Otis

I just hate it when the whole newsgroup becomes about _me_.

Don't you?

No, I guess you don't.

Obviously you didn't understand a word of what I have written above,
now did you.  Obviously you insist on remaining the chief idiot on
this s.m.v. network, and a mean one too.
otisbrown@pa.net - 20 Sep 2007 03:23 GMT
Dear "Brainy",

Subject: You obviouly have missed my point.

I SUGGESTED (admited) the very few people have
an "interest" in keeping their vision clear at
the 20/50 level.  (By Bates, or any other method).

That is why I stated that 99 percent of the population
has no interest (and the motivation) to clear
their vision.  I think that is an accurate statement,
and I think you would have been part of the
99 percent who had no interest.

That is a FAIR AND HONEST STATMENT.

Then MikeOD, made the flippant remark that
99 percent of the population ARE NOT MYOPIC.

I did not "attack" Mike as you stated.

I simply ASKED HIM POLITELY to document
his statement.

And then you JUMPED on that request
as an ATTACK -- which is obviously was not.

Then we get all of these "statistics".

JudyOD says that 2.5 percent are myopic.

Then MikeOD says 29 percent.

Then I post the records for China -- and they
are indeed mixed -- but I posted them
as 88 percent for ENTERING university students.

I would SUGGEST there is a lack of CONSISTENCY
in reporting SCIENCE here -- and we should
understand these reports that are truly
all over the "map".

Let us not attack each other because optometry
is confused about statistics, and reports
rates of from 2.5 percent to 88 percent
myopic.

This is SUPPOSED to be a leanring process.

And those are indeed the facts.

Screwed up though they may be.

Best,

Otis

In fairness, you never actually have one.

You're nothing but a pathological liar and an absolute f.cking idiot.

Hitting the vodka, Lena?

Maybe you should go to sleep now.

I'm not sure it's a question of understanding.  Otis only posts, he
doesn't read.  I made the mistake of responding to him a couple of
times.  My wife wears a plus lens.  He got pretty excited.  Even Dan
Abel's wife is doing plus prevention!  My wife is 57.  I don't think
myopia is in her future.  She wears a plus lens because she is a
hyperope.  Duh!
