Hello,

Has anyone found a generic contact lens saline solution that is
comparable to Bausch & Lomb ReNu Multi-Plus No Rub saline solution?  I
have been trying to find a generic in order to save some $$ as it is
ridiculous having to pay $7+ for salt water.  I've tried Meijer's,
Kroger's and Wal-Mart's (Equate brand) equivalents, and none seem to
be exactly the same, but Wal-Mart's comes the closest.  I feel a
little burning with this solution, but it's bearable.  It would be
nice to find something that mimics Bausch & Lomb's solution exactly,
as that solution provides for a comfortable wearing.

Any help would be appreciated!

Thanks,
Kevin

You may not be able to.  IIRC, B&L has a patent on including
potassium chloride in solutions (their "Sensitive Eyes" products).
A patent makes it illegal for others to mfr potassium solutions
without B&L agreement (royalties).

Kroger and Wal-Mart don't make contact lens solutions, but rather they buy
in bulk, shopping for overruns and surplus from each of the major
manufacturers. We know they can't alter these FDA-approved formulas, but we
don't know whether this week's "Equate" came from AMO or B&L or Ciba or
someone else. There's only a handful of approved solutions, in the US.

This doesn't help you much, but it explains why there isn't a simple answer
to your question. If it were just "salt water" you'd still be able to buy
salt tablets and make your own saline.

Thanks, everyone, for your replies.  I guess I either shell out the
big bucks or I deal with the slight discomfort!

Target and Costco/Kirkland have their own versions.  I've used both with no
problems, but prefer the Kirkland stuff -- it's cheaper.

It only takes 2 men to tile a bathroom
if you slice them thinly enough.

Renu multi-plus no rub is not a saline solution, it's a multi-purpose
solution for disinfecting, as well as cleaning/rinsing.

I would not stay with a brand that caused a burning sensation. You
could go with some other brands of multi-purpose solution, like Alcon.
They may be slightly cheaper.

I'm not a doctor, but I'm awfully well-versed in preservative-induced
ocular surface toxicity.

I totally agree with Bucky.

What you're feeling there with that "little burning" is, quite likely,
cell apoptosis -- the eating away, and killing off of, your corneal
epithelial cells.

Most of those cells will regenerate, but ... you'll ALSO be causing a
disruption and destabilization of your tear film layer that will begin
to cause symptoms of dry eye.

Contact lens wear ALONE will often cause that (through mechanical
irritation).  Adding a chemical catalyst to SPEED the process is a
really bad idea.

Maybe you ought to consider an AoSept-type solution??

I am agree!

Just a warning , generic solutions less safer than brands, But even brands:

On May 25, AMO (Advanced Medical Optics) announced a recall of their "No Rub"
Complete MoisturePlus Multipurpose Contact Solution
This Complete Moisture Plus recall is not so distant from Bausch & Lomb's
recall of ReNu with MoistureLoc, which caused serious injury to many contact
lens wearers.

potentially exposing an untold number of unsuspecting contact lens wearers
to this painful  (AK) infection that can cause permanent vision loss or
blindness.
There is thousands of links , for example:

CORRECT!

From guidelines of American Academy of Ophthalmology
GUIDELINE TITLE  Refractive errors.
POTENTIAL HARMS
•    Complications of contact lens use: The most serious risk of contact lens
use is the development of microbial keratitis, which can lead to visual loss
even if properly treated. Other complications include tarsal papillary
conjunctivitis, bulbar conjunctival changes, epithelial keratopathy, corneal
neovascularization, nonmicrobial corneal infiltrates, and corneal warpage.
Endothelial changes can also occur, including polymegathism, pleomorphism,
and, rarely, reduction of endothelial cell density. Progressive corneal
thinning of the epithelium and stroma during lens wear has also been reported.

oh, a better solution (no pun intended) is to use multi-purpose for
cleaning/disinfecting (soaking overnight), but use saline for rinsing
before putting the contacts into your eyes. The saline may wash off
the chemicals in the multi-purpose solution that caused the burning.
And saline is much cheaper (~$2) than multi-purpose. Give that a try.

No, we don't advise saline unless: it  is preserved, or it is aerosol.
Ordinarily, we don't advocate saline under any circumstances as it is
contaminated within 2 hours of opening. Stick with Renu as it is
designed to work properly, not be a cheap copy.

Kevin, continue to use the cheap crap and send me the photos for my
collection when they ulcerate. Then you may understand why we don't
tell people to buy cheap walmart crap.

your choice.
