RGP materials

Can someone tell me a little about the trade-offs in material selection
for RGP?  My eye doc concluded that my left lens was flexing, allowing
a residual 0.5D of astigmatism to persist with the lenses in place.  He
went to a stiffer material, which he said would not be as good with
respect to dry eye, but I'm also finding that I have significantly more
flare around lights (and generally low contrast) when the lighting is
not bright.  This seems like a too-small optical zone issue, even
though the lens is physically the same size.  Is there a reason that
the stiffer material should cause this?

the optical zone might be smaller regardless of the lens having the
same diameter.

Would a different material necessitate this sometimes, or would this
just be a screw up?
