OTC Reading Glasses

Well, got my new progressives. Small improvement since my eyes didn't
change much in four years. My eyes seem to be matched a little better.

My concern is still with reading. When they handed me the new glasses they
gave me a card with bold type print to check for acuity. It looked fine,
but reading a book or newspaper with skinny fonts is much different. I can
get a good focus with both eyes if I hold the page in exactly the right
place and then I can get 5 lines or so in focus the way I like it.

So I'm considering reading glasses. The clerk at the optical store gave me
the best advice.. she said progressives were fine for everyday wear, but
for concentrated reading tasks reading glasses were best.

Prescription reading glasses would be around $300 CDN. I could get OTC
reading glasses through the mail for around $75 US. Is that a crazy idea?
What would be the differences between OTC and prescription reading glasses?
According to my new prescription both eyes are +2.50.

Dear Father Mike,

Subject:  Plus lens in the store

They run about $10, but prices run between $5 to $25.

It seems around here OTC reading glasses don't go over +1.75. At least I've
never seen any +2.50s or over.

I've seen +3.50s here in SoCal.  Most of the frames and lenses of the
readers and sunglasses in the 99-Cents-Only stores are perfectly respectable
and if you lose or step on your readers it's no big deal.

I always like your quotes, Bev.  Where do you get them?

Wherever I find them, and I beg, borrow and steal with equal fervor!

For sure. They are not as common, but keep looking.
I have a pair of +3.50's I use for examining printed circuits...

Personally, I buy my cheap readers at the Dollar Tree stores.

How even Chinese sweatshops can turn out decent lenses and frames cheap
enough to make a profit at $1 US retail, I have no idea, but they are all
over.  For a cut above, try the online retailers. Zenni Optical comes to
mind. They will sell prescription glaises in simple frames for as cheap as
$8.95 US. There are others in the same approximate market.

Yeah, I think about that too Dave! I've always wondered how they are
able to sell at such low prices! I see a lot of Chinese glasses
sellers on e-bay especially LOL. I guess that the material used is
very abundant in China, thus the low prices. Either that, or there
needs to be some fair trade system implemented!

I will check them out. I suppose the frames must make a big difference in
price. Some on-line retailers are so cheap it seems too good to be true.

They do have a wide range of frames, art various prices.
But even the most expensive titanium or memory-metal frames are a small
fraction of the prices at big retailers.
I understand that cutting a lens blank to fit a frame is now virtually
hands-off, done by MC machines. A large stock of preformed lenses in
combinations of sphere and cylinder strengths makes it minimal labor...

I would recommend calling your eye doctor.  If +2.50 is your reading
prescription, that's fine, but if it is the distance prescription, then
you would be in trouble here in the US, since OTC glasses from the rack
in the store probably wouldn't come in suitable powers.  I don't know
about Canada, and of course don't know your reading prescription, if it
isn't +2.50.
