A coworker asked me the other day about a floater that's been annoying him for some weeks. He's aware that floaters are common and generally mean nothing alarming, but this one is not a floater - it's fixed in position, pretty much in the center of on eye's visual field. I told him that I'd recommend he get it examined, but so far, he's ignoring it. Any insight I could pass on, that might either lay the issue to rest or get him motivated to see his doctor? It sounds like a blind spot in the center of his vision, and it could be a macular hole. It might be something else or maybe nothing, I don't know, and only a professional examination of his eye will determine it. Macular hole can be repaired and closed (mine was). It's not an emergency, but the sooner the better chances for vision recovery. Hope this helps. A spot not moving in the central visual field is not something to be ignored. Period. Yesterday, I told him the consensus from here and that I'd gotten the same advice from my Ophthalmologist during an appointment that morning. As it happened, he was calling me from the car, on the way home from the airport; decided he'd try to fit in a checkup that afternoon... Dave |
