Can you confirm the proper descriptions for my eyes?

Not a very clear subject line, I know.

I am in my 40's and I guess I have a pretty normal vision change.  Have
not worn glasses until now, and the O.D. did say that I am fine to pass
the drivers test without glasses, so using them is entirely up to me.  I
do love the improvement in vision, so I am getting used to using them.

The O.D. gave me:

Normal/Distance:
    Sph    Cyl    Axis    Add
OD    -0.50    -0.25    165    +0.75
OS    plano    -0.75    040    +0.75

I think this says that I am a bit near sighted in the right eye and have a
bit of astigmatism in the left eye.

That sound right?

A bit more complicated?

Actually (I'm not a doc), you have

- a slight astigmatism in your right eye,

- a higher degree of astigmatism in your left eye,

- slight nearsightedness (myopia) in your right eye, and

- presbyopia in both eyes ("old eyes," requiring magnification to
read or do near work.)

For being in your 40's, it sounds to me like you're in pretty good
shape, optometrically.

If the glasses help, by all means wear them.

Cool, thanks much.

That would seem to fit my totally amateur reading of the numbers
themselves.  The primary reason for the checkup was to make sure the eyes
were healthy, since I had not seen an eye doctor in maybe 25 years or
more. I am pretty sure I will get a checkup every other year if I don't
detect worsening vision.

Oh, and I have been reading enough of this group to know to avoid the
suggestions of the Bates folk.

Dear Doug,

Your OD made and excellent recommendation.

The slight minus he gave your is ALWAYS IMPRESSIVE.

However, you should probably not use it unless legally
required.

Like Niel Brooks (who has extensive medical knowledge),
I am also not a doctor.

Enjoy,

Otis

I wouldn't waste any time trying to parse this contradictory crap.
Otis is probably just off his meds again.
