My prescription says FreshLook Colorblands Toric. Can I change the brand of
toric lenses to another most likely cheaper brand? I can't help but feeling
that the only reason the opthamologist wrote in this brand was because that
was the brand she sold.

Chances are you are right in your assumption. Kick backs are common in
the medical industry. You can always go elsewhere to get a script.
Nothing says you can't shop around.

Don't know where you live but here in Canada, a doctor who accepts a
"kick back" is in big trouble and may lose his or her license.
She can shop around, but there is only one eye colour changing
disposable toric available.

But I'm still sure it goes on anyway. There are always going to be
those who are willing to risk their licenses for money. Even in
Canada.

I can't recall any such offers from CL manufacturers. Have they just skipped
over me for the last 20 years?
Regardless, there's still only one toric with opaque tint.

Sure, of course. If an eyedoc wants to do it, they will. Just because
they "skipped" over you, do you really think kick back schemes don't
exist?

Since you haven't been approached in 20 years does it mean it doesn't
happen?

Cash kickbacks from contact lens manufacturers? I doubt it. I haven't heard
of any practitioners getting cash back.
They're pretty liberal with rebates to end-users. For the dispensers, they
do co-op advertising, they sponsor dinner for local CE meetings and they
take the staff out to lunch.
Frame manufacturers and their reps are probably more aggressive with this
sort of marketing but I haven't had much experience with them.

I'm sure he was being facetious. No, the manufacturers do NOT offer
rebates to the doc. The only consideration we ever get is an occasional
lunch or some extra trial lenses. Any payment from a manufacturer to a
doc would be suicide for both of them. Perpetuating urban myths does
not make them true... What IS true, is that some manufacturers offer
significant discounts for volume buying. Most docs don't come close to
the quantities necessary to make this a significant factor. What's also
true is that most docs get comfortable with certain lenses, and tend to
use those more than others. Even more true is that most of us like to
select what we think will work the best. That's what I do and have been
burned recently doing it (by the Si lenses, which are the best lenses
when they work and terrible ones when they don't.).

She used that brand because you need a toric and you wanted to change
or enhance your eye colour. There are no other eye colour changing
torics; if you want less expensive lenses, you will have to give up
the colour. You cannot change the brand without having your doctor
refit and rewrite the prescription.

colorblEnds not colorblAnds, amusing sp mistake though...
drop the color and save.
kickbacks not part of the plan IMO.
