Please could someone advise why toric contacts don't start till the
prescription is -0.75? What happens to people who have a prescription less
than that, is the astigmatism uncorrected with contacts? Thanks

For astigmatism less than 0.75, the difference in corrected vision
comparing spherical to toric is neglible and the toric lens is more
expensive and less stable. So yes, for small astigmatism, it is
uncorrected.

Isn't also the case that sometimes someone will be given more sphere to
compensate, like an extra .25 to compensate for .50 astigmatism?

yes. the spherical equivalent of 0.50 cyl is 0.25 sphere.

No, that's not useful.
It does not change the best corrected vision acuity and even can cause a
headache.

Less stable? I can't figure why you'd say that, assuming we're not
talking RGP torics or something, which for such low cyls wouldn't make
much sense. In the case of toric soft lenses, there is no reason that
.5 or even .25 couldn't be made, other than economics. And a .5 or .25
cyl soft toric should be every bit as, if not more, stable than a .75 or
1.00 cyl toric.

Some start at -0.50.

Typically, yes.

in some cases the right spherical cl can correct some of the
astigamatism.

Some soft contactlenses come with a 0.5 cylinder.
Having said that, many times I try out what comforts the client better,
whitout or with the -0.75 cylinder if this type of lens fits the client
better instead of the lenstype with a 0.5 cylinder.
