Hello everyone,
My mum had a cateract operation in a netcare mobile operating theatre.
It all went pear shaped and after three operations to fix the original
op and fix a detached retina they've now said that the only thing to do
is have a corneal transplant.
She really isn't looking forward to it, but she already has a small
cataract in her other eye and is hoping to fix ths eye before she loses
the sight in the other.
Can anyone tell me really what it's like, how long it takes before it
feels better, what the real odds are of her seeing out of this eye
again? At the moment she sees very little out of this eye before 10pm
which is about when shes going to bed!
I'd love to give her some positive feedback about this op so hopefully
someone will let me know?

its hard to give advise without knowing more details about your mom's
eye problems.

but all i can say is, generally speaking, a corneal transplant does not
lead to a happy outcome.  the best expected final visual acuity after a
successful operation is subpar, usually at about 20/40 or so.  and it
sounds like your mother's eye has had a few more serious problems to
add to the situation so i wouldn't be holding out any great
expectations.  certainly it would be better than her current situation
or her doctors wouldn't have recommended it.

sorry i can't be more positive.  good luck.

There are just so many factors and variables and it's
impossible to predict over a newsgroup how your
mother will do after her corneal surgery. But I do fit
quite a few post graft patients with rigid post graft
contact lenses and many do quite well visually.
Many see as well as 20/20 corrected vision. So
your mom may do well- depends on a host of
factors though.
