Sphere: lens power in + or -
Cylinder: additional lens power at a specific axis
Axis: location or meridian of action of cylinder power.
OD: right eye (from the Latin)
OS: left eye

I think "S" stands for "sinister", meaning left-handed, because people
used to think that being left-handed was creepy and suspicious. So if
"S" is left, then "D" must be right.
The cylinder and axis numbers combined together are the astigmatism;
they are separate from the spherical.
If you have a fast connection, Google and Wikipedia are often good ways
to find basic explanations of unfamiliar terms. I also found
eyeglasses.com to have a helpful amount of detail.

Hi, you guys, I am going to share a good thing to you! I think this
information may help you. I bought a pair of eyeglasses online on
eyebuydirect.com last week. The glasses I ordered is frameless plastic,
which looks cool, and I'm quite satisfied with the high quality with
the low price (the second one just cost me $15.95, complete with my
prescription). The shipping is quick too (got mine in 12 days). After
that, they gave me a coupon code to encourage me to buy more. With this
code, I can buy any eyeglasses sale with 5% off! It's cool and the
price will be lower. But I'm not going to buy another one in this
year, because I had bought 3 pairs within 2 month on this site (two for
me, another for my father), but I hope this code will be useful to you!
The coupon code is "glasses923". Their website is

I second Scott. Just when you think you can find some pure information
some person has to ruin it by trying to sell something. Don't SPAM it's
just not cool.
