I'm fine watching TV but cannot read subtitles on movies -
through TV or through DVD.

It was suggested that I purchase a pair of magnifying TV
eyeglasses.  Has anyone tried them and do they help or do
they make the picture really awful?

An example is:
http://www.independentliving.com/products.asp?dept=244&deptname=Spectacle+Binoculars
or  http://www.independentliving.com/prodinfo.asp?number=810234

These two look very similar except one is made by Coil.

Any experience and/or suggestions?

TIA

My guess is that these are very similar to a 2X telescopic converter that
goes onto a camera. They are Galilean telescopes or opera glasses adjusted
to be afocal. I would also guess that you will soon tire of them. You will
have to look directly at the screen without turning you head.

If you have opera glasses, NOT prism binoculars, try them. If you can stand
the small field of view, they may be what you want?

Yes, they work fine. I sell them myself as a low-vision aid and have
had great success with them.

Thanks so much for your recommendation

Which pair do you sell?  The Coil ones or the other ones I
linked that said specifically for TV but seemed to be an
unknown brand?

Thanks again.

Do you currently have glasses for distance viewing and have you had a
recent eye exam?  Do you have an eye disease that is causing reduced
acuity and did your eye doctor recommend the TV glasses?  How big is
your TV and how close do you sit to it.

If you need glasses for distance vision, then first try them for the
TV.  The TV magnifying gizmo is usually for people with eye disease and
reduced acuity that cannot be corrected by glasses.  A larger TV or
sitting closer would help as well.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I am extremely astigmatic and have never been able to
tolerate a correction stronger than about 20/40 - just
enough to drive.

I have had a recent exam and my distance glasses are as good
as it gets for me.  A greater correction brings eyestrain
and headaches I can't adjust to.

My screen is about 24" and my living room is set up so that
I have to sit about 6 or 7 feet away.  I can see the picture
fine - but can't read the small print....
