Hello

My first post to this ng.

For many years I've had Dry Eye Syndrome, which I now believe has
progressed to Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (due to the Hormone
treatment I've had over the last 18mths for Prostate Cancer.)

Anyone in this ng suffer with MGD and if so how are you
treating/managing it?

I've been to high-priced Ophthalmologists here (in au) and they cannot
even positively Diagnose my condition.

I have researched this on the web and found some references and
treatment recommendations from an Eye Clinic in the Philippines.
Good news is that they do in fact work!

Problem is, I cannot convince my own GP that these things provide
relief. I guess I have to suffer for Professional/Ethical reasons :(

I see tons of patients with MGD.

I typically treat it with a combination of lid scrubs/massage, warm
soaks, meibomian gland expression and oral tetracyclines while
addressing any concurrent dry eye, if present.

Consider seeing one at a teaching institution.

That's exactly how I'm treating it!
The big problem here is the GP doesn't want to prescribe the
Doxycycline for more than 2 courses.

I have an Appointment in a couple of mths  at Fremantle Hospital Eye
Clinic (which IS a teaching Hospital)

I'll have to soldier on just with the compresses and scrubs and gland
expression, if I cannot get a few month's supply of Doxycycline caps.

Thanx for your input.

Be aware that the dosing of doxycycline for MGD is not the same as
therapeutic dosage for use as an antibiotic!  Additionally, the use of
oral meds is added to the protocol if the other non-pharmaceutical
treatments alone do not work.

Clarrie,

send me an email and I will send you instructions on lid therapy.

Also, forget ophthals, they won't do anything other than give lubes.

Go see Steven Leslie or Gary Fitzpatrick. Look them up in the Yellow
pages under optometrists.
