Recently Lucentis and Macugen have afforded
great hope to patients with developing wet amd.
For patients with dry amd are there equally
wonderful therapies on the horizon?

Thanks, H.K.

Perhaps.

A number of different and combined therapies are being investingated.
These include Lucentis/Avastin combined with triamcinolone and PDT
(photodynamic therapy) in various combinations and Rheopheresis.  Some
of the results are very promising, although not as dramatic as that
which we see with neovascular (wet) AMD.  Still pretty good, though.

Meanwhile, nutritional supplementation with AREDS vitamins is a good
idea. Do consult with your doctor before embarking on any treatment.

I suspect we will be seeing the results of some these studies later this
year, some next month.

Thank you for the encouraging reply.  Where will these
results be first published?  Is there a website or forum I
should follow?  Will ophthalmologists specializing in
cataract surgery automatically apprise their amd patients?

In the professional publications.  Those of us in the biz who know the
researchers might get a "first peek" and those who are invested in the
companies that stand to make big bucks might have some info, all before
it becomes "public".

Can't think of one but ask around here again periodically.

You can't count on it. Not all of us docs follow every new thing all the
time.
