Hello All --

I'm a new member, and I have some questions.  There were posts on the
site about one eye being so much worse that the other, and I have that
problem with my eyes, plus others.  According to the doctor my right
eye is 20/20 for distance and my left eye is 20/70 without correction.
With correction I'm supposed to have 20/20 in both eyes for distance.
For close-up my left eye is much better than my right eye. The
prescription he gave me was OD +0.50 -0.50 x 110 and OS -2.50 -0.25 x
90.  I also am having trouble with double vision so he added +2.50 with
3 diopters prism base in right eye.  I agree with him that I'm
unwilling to wear the prisms because all I have to do is get my head
just the tiniest bit off center when looking through the glasses and I
have double vision again.

I'm so frustrated because I should be able to wear these glasses and be
able to see, but I can't, but they don't see any other problems with my
eyes.  There are times when I have double vision in just one eye (could
be either, but usually the right).  He told me to wear a patch over one
eye and be thankful my eyes aren't any worse.  I agree that I get along
OK using bigger print on the computer, but when I'm reading printed
paper, large print doesn't help. I can read fairly small print for a
while, but not to read more than 15 min at the most at a time.  I think
I can use the computer because of the lighting.

I'm also having trouble with nightblindness, and have had for over 20
years.  I've also started having trouble with sun glare.  I've taken to
wearing my sunglasses whenever I'm outside even on a cloudy day.  I
also loose things in plain sight especially on a busy surface.  I've
had to call my husband in to find the canopener that is right in front
of me on the counter.

I've also got all kinds of floaters and spots that confuse me about
what is really a spot on the table or a spot in my eyes.

I hope someone can explain what's going on with my eyes.  I'd just like
to know.

Your case is complicated, if you are not happy with your doctor's
explanations, call and ask again for him to explain your problem.
Double vision in one eye could be related to a number of
conditions;consider asking him to refer you for a second opinion.

Are you using a progressive?  Sometime people notice double vision off
centre with them and you may want to try a lined bifocal.

Dr. Judy --

I don't wear progressives, I've worn trifocals for years, the ones with
lines.  I haven't been wearing my glasses because the prisms in the
glasses bother me more than not wearing the glasses.  When I wear the
glasses I have to keep my head in one position because the minute I
start turning my head just the least little bit I start getting the
double vision again, and the prisms seem to make the problem worse.

I don't get 2 complete images most of the time, just when I'm looking
at distance or looking out the back window when I'm trying to see to
back up (I don't drive anymore, this is just an example of when I get
actual double vision).  Most of the time everything is fuzzy, even with
my glasses.  I would never be a witness in a court because I don't see
features clearly and mix people up all the time.

I've seen 2 ophlamologists in the last 3 months.  Before I moved here I
saw an ophthlamologist in 2002.  According to them I shouldn't have all
this trouble, but I still have the problems.

It has to be something that is hereditary, because my cousin and I have
almost exactly the same symptoms.  She's blind in one eye and still
sees double at a distance.

I would have just continued to muddle along, but my husband's chronic
back problems started getting worse and he's been unable to work.  I've
got several health issues and working with the computer would be the
best for me.  Back in 2002 I was unable to continue working at my job
because trying to go back and forth between the printed page and the
computer screen because of blurred vision, my eyes not wanting to focus
after I had been working for a while.  So I went to the job store to
find out what kind of a job I could get with my eyes the way they were.
I learned that if I had gone to a job store when I started having
problems they could have helped me keep the job I had.  All I needed
was a diagnosis from the OD.  I still don't have a diagnosis I
understand except that my eyes don't work together, and I haven't
gotten any closer to going to work than when I started.

Sorry, I got longwinded again.  Dr. Judy thank you for your interest.
I'll try to keep my answers shorter in the future.

You have a very large difference in prescription between the two eyes
and can expect to have induced prism when off centre.  Since your
distance vision R is likely OK without glasses and near vision L is OK
without glasses use no glasses for most tasks with a pair of single
vision glasses for computer.  Using a contact lens on the left to
correct myopia and then trifocals on top might work.

It would help to know your diagnosis: do you have strabismus?
