I had vitrectomy (OS) in May 2003. CME developed a few months after the
operation, and I treated it for a long time. Just last week, about 18
months after treatment was completely discontinued, the symptoms appeared
again. A few days' treatment with steroids was effective, however.
I had a vitrectomy (OD) in Aug. 2005. CME developed which is still being
treated. In any case, is it sometimes a chronic, lifelong condition after
such an operation? I have an appointment on 8/3, so my MD may also have
some insight on this issue.

1.) Occasionally is chronic, and /or recurrent, as this case may be. Only
your retinologist who knows your case can give you an informed answer about
this.
2.) Depends somewhat on what the vitrectomy was for. Some inflammatory
problems that are ameliorated by vitrectomy may recur and cause recurrent
CME. On the other hand, vitrectomy, as with any intraocular surgery, may
cause CME also, but usually won't recur late like this.
