Is Stigmatism Hereditary or something that you get as you stress your eye
through the years?
Thanks

I'd think it's an acquired problem of those with too much religion on
'em. But that's just my opinion.

It's called astigmatism... it's not strongly hereditary nor in general
is it caused by stress (though some would say that small amounts can be
caused by squinting...).
It's just one of those things that some people have - like a crooked
nose, or big feet.

I think it's fairly hereditary. My maternal grandmom had about 3 D.
O.U., my mom has about 2.5 D. O.U., I had about 2.5 O.U. and one of my 3
kids has about 3.0 O.U. (the other 2 have just a little, more like my
wife). Another anecdotal piece I have is that in my practice I have had
3 sets of identical twins. Each set has essentially identical cyls.

Depends on the amount. Higher amounts of astigmatism
tends be more likely to be hereditary whereas lower
amounts are not. Not due to visual stress in either case.
