I had surgery for a retinal detachment 3 weeks ago. My procedure
involved laser photocoagulation of a retinal tear, placement of a
scleral buckle and insertion of an air bubble within the eye(for 1
week). According to the RV surgeon, everything is looking great at
this stage regarding reattachment of the retina but recovery is a
process that requires patience. I have a large floater impregnated
with tiny black specks that floats to my central vision as well as
tiny black specks external to the floater that were not present
before surgery. I can see through them although my distant vision is
blurry. I have been told that these are pigment and blood and should
resolve with time. I am able to read and see things up close (8-10
inches) with good detail. I realize the scleral buckle has changed
the shape of my eye and my distant vision may need to be corrected
with optics. I am interested in information from anyone who has had
this surgery and what types of things they experienced in the weeks
and months afterwards. When did the blurry vision improve? Did you
experience any of these black specks? Etc. I am trying to be patient
as I know this was a major surgery and although factors make this type
of surgery unique to each individual, I think it would be helpful to
hear from others regarding their own experiences. Thanks in advance
for any replies.

How long was it between the detachment and the repair? This makes a
huge difference.

That's the understatement of the year.

Not only has it changed the shape of your eye, but it may have given you
irregular astigmatism. This cannot be completely corrected with normal
glasses or contacts.

I have had detachments in both eyes. I didn't get the first corrected
soon enough, and have never recovered complete vision. I have 20/20
vision in the other eye.
The first eye took months to recover vision. The second took about two
weeks. It varies a whole lot. Do you have good vision in the other
eye? I basically only use one eye now.
