Neil, I know you like a good argument as much as the next guy since
you've emailed me off list trying to raise my ire (which didn't work
remember--because we actually agreed).

you don't like my posts, put me in your kill file.

Dr. G appears to be a good optometrist--he's offered me some good advice
when I've asked and I am grateful for that. I can't question that since
I'm not an eye care professional--

REPEAT: I appreciate the advice Dr. G has given me when I've asked. It
was extremely helpful.

but his reply to Ace was anything but altruistic. He was basically
saying he wouldn't give the time of day to Ace and btw, no one else
should either. Oh, and while I have your attention, let me post a few of
the things I've accomplished as a "charitable agency" including my
upcoming award...

Why did he reply to my suggestion to Ace to find ways to afford orthoK
except to say Ace doesn't deserve anything and to show that he's so
charitable--not in one message, but 3!

Dr. G agrees that everyone operates with self interest. this generally
trumps the altruism except for a small minority. This self-interest/bias
discussion goes back years between us, btw. I hope (and think) he knows
that it's not personal. But when one is a professional and a charitable
agency, appearances are important. I was calling him on it. that's why
he asked me what my problem was.

Btw it's funny you think of smv as the Ace RT and Otis chat room. I
think of it as the Neil, Dan, and Mike show. I posted 30 messages in
March, you posted 126, Dan 296 and Mike 80. I highly doubt that my
postings discourage any "real" discussion taking place here. I assume
that most people don't even read them.

since you brought up the subject of what gets posted here and why people
participate, are your legal threats against Otis altruistic? do you
truly believe that everyone besides yourself is so stupid that they
can't make up their own minds about the crap he posts? why are you
wasting the government's time and money with frivolous lawsuits? Money
better spent on education and health programs IMHO.

why do you put $$ in a$$hole. you think I have a financial interest in
anything that goes on here? wish i did. i sure could use some extra cash
:)

Not necessarily the best answer.  If you take the tack most likely to
drive off yet another doctor, then I don't plan to sit idly by.

Your read.  My read was that Ace might be an exceptionally difficult
patient.  Problem here: the Aces and Otises of s.m.v. only talk.  They
don't listen.  If Ace had listened to Dr. G's comments and taken them
to heart, he might have improved his chances with a doc.

Quality, not quantity.  Believe what you wish.  I've watched the trend
of this ng over 6+ years.

Care for some cream cheese with  your red herring?

I can understand that. My intent is not to drive anybody anywhere. I'd
rather pay for the carpool and get driven around :)

It's true, he hasn't "heard" anything anyone has said. That's why I
think it is so important for him to go for an evaluation with a real
live person f2f. Did you know that Ace is almost completely deaf?
Literally. But his deafness is psychological as well. I felt that Dr.
G's post was unnecessarily discouraging. Ace needs real life experience,
and if he can't afford it, there are ways to find support. My
suggestions weren't facetious. Well maybe the "friends" part was.

Do you mean quality like these?

Would you like mustard with yours while you don't address my legitimate
questions?

Dr. Leukoma - 01 Apr 2006 21:57 GMT
Come on, RT.  Neil's interpretation of my post was the correct one.  OK
is a long, time-intensive process, with a significant downside for Dr.
Maller if it doesn't meet Ace's expectations.  If Ace NEEDED
orthokeratology, that would be another matter.  He just wants it, but
then he wants it on his own unrealistic terms.  I think that you are
putting Dr. Maller in a really untenable situation.  I've read Ace's
posts all over the net.  One day he is wanting an Intacs workup from
Dr. Trattler, and the next day he is wanting an OK workup from Dr.
Maller.  Do you really believe that Dr. Maller should step into such a
bog?  I'm just saying that I wouldn't.

I run into the same risks when I post on LME and other BB's dedicated
to refractive surgery, because at any time a similar situation can
arise with respect to one of my patients on the internet where many of
them are actively posting and reading.  It is a very tenuous tight rope
to walk.

And, while you are accusing me of unkind remarks toward Ace, they are
nothing compared to the things you have said to and about him.  Do you
want me to dredge them up?  You have a tendency to be very
meanspirited, and I would ask you to search your conscience for a good
reason to be here, other than to badger Ace, me, and now Neil.

I would not wish Ace on anyone.

I don't know. I don't have an opinion on that and I wouldn't advise him
one way or the other. But I really believe that it won't hurt Ace to ask.

>I'm just saying that I wouldn't.

You've made that clear. But that wasn't really the topic of the thread,
was it? That was my point

I guess what's missing here is that I assume that Maller would declare
Ace an unsuitable candidate and then that would be the end of the Ace
fantasies of OrthoK. Ace has said that he would take whatever Maller
says as the ultimate word on this discussion.

It is true that I badger Ace. I don't know why. I don't post such
messages to anyone else. A lot of people badger Ace. I suppose I would
really like him to taste a little reality. But he's really remarkable in
his consistency, I'll give him that.

Speaking of reality, 've never posted anything about you or to you on
this NG unless you have replied to one of my posts. Now when was that?
Earlier today if I recall correctly. You replied to my suggestion TO Ace
that he find financial help by raising money or asking for a pro bono
consult. Today I posted to Neil in direct response to something he
posted to me. I'd hardly call that badgering. Would you call your
response to my post badgering me? If that's the case, then quit
badgering me, okay? LOL

OK, enough said.  I wasn't trying to badger you and you weren't trying
to badger me.  Tomaito, tomawto, let's call the whole thing off.

Besides, I'm still waiting to find out your true identity....author,
U.N. activist...

I'm a potahto eater...

I like U.N. activist. I think that would suit me well :)

You know, I think my name is "Dan".  I wondered why I had all that pain
on the ends of my fingers.  I figured it was the needle sticks from my
blood sugar testing, but it must have been my posts.

I didn't check Google, but my newserver shows 36 posts in March from you
since March 3.  It shows 63 for me.  Google shows 65 for me for March (I
must have had a couple of posts on the first or second).

You're right, my apologies. The 296 includes all the messages you
posted on all google groups in February including those on
rec.food.cooking and rec.nude. Sorry for attibuting all 296 to
sci.med.vision. My bad.
RT - 02 Apr 2006 01:30 GMT
Whoops. I meant March not February. Don't want to be the cause of any
further misinformation.
