ellis22@gmail.com - 10 Mar 2006 13:50 GMT Hi all I recently posted this on another forum for help, was wondering if I could get any kind advice here.
I'm farsighted, my original perscription was +3.25 L and 3.50 R, these where perfectly fine up until last christmas when my eyesight got worse, the opticion did a eyetest with eye drops to find out my real perscription and turned out at around +5.50.
They said they would not make the glasses this strong due to it being to much for me and so it turned out he made me a modified pair that was +2.00, I can no longer do up close stuff anymore and I get frequent eyestrain everyday now.
Is there anything I can do?, this is really getting me down not being able to do anything, im tired of straining my eyes.
Will my perscription settle down one day?.
Thankyou for any advice.
Ellis.

Sorry... no help here... but I am interested in this post because I am slightly long sighted, and have always wondered what good performing a test with drops in will do?
I've been for an eye exam today (another post), and had drops, and I am perfect at distance, but close up, I get blurry vision, can't focus, double vision... quite curious if that actually means anything.
Regards, Simon
ellis22@gmail.com - 10 Mar 2006 14:02 GMT Simon I also have been getting double vision, blurry vision and can't focus also without drops!, my eyes where fine and no problems up until christmas.

You don't want to get +5.50 now because that was measured with the eye drops which relax the muscles in your eye and do not allow for normal accommodation. But as you get older, you muscles get weaker, so your Rx will probably need to get stronger, slowly approaching the +5.50 Rx (if you live long enough)..
Go back to your OD and explain the problem.

If you were comfortable with the 3.5, why in the world would they cut it back all the way to 2? Seems wrong. I can't imagine why they'd do that. That change is probably responsible for your symptoms. What is your age?

I"m not sure why your original prescription was "cut" (reduced) when the cycloplegic exam showed 2 diopters of more plus. Doesn't make sense to me- the reduction in your rx would just cause additional near point strain.
Depending upon all the variables, I usually will prescribe up to the full cycloplegic to something in between, such as a +4.50 or so.
My advice, get a prescription recheck with the original provider or get a second opinion.

ellis22@gmail.com - 10 Mar 2006 15:51 GMT Hi Frank,
I will follow your advice.
Thanks Ellis.
doctor_my_eye@msn.com - 10 Mar 2006 16:09 GMT A young high hyperope like you should consider contacts. You could comfortably wear more plus directly on the eyeball because things aren't magnified when the lens sits right on your eyeball. I have patients like you in the +5.00 range that have a whole new life after they get contacts.
ellis22@gmail.com - 10 Mar 2006 16:35 GMT Thanks doctor_my_eye@msn.com, I will look into contacts.
Ellis.
CatmanX - 10 Mar 2006 19:56 GMT Just to throw in my 2 pennies, you will find that the general rule is to NEVER reduce the script of a hyperope unless there is a shift towards zero.
A cycloplegic refraction is pretty useless as it tells you only where you will end up, not what you need now.
At 21, the original script would need a minor increase at most, unless you were having specific symptoms, which would require more assessment. I would be thimking in the +3.50-4.00 range, but would want to try this out with near tasks first.
Good luck.

Ellis.
CatmanX - 10 Mar 2006 20:21 GMT Without testing you, it is hard to say precisely what you need. Your Mum's Rx may be correct, but the PD may differ and cause problems.
Suffice to say, your +2.00 script is not right for you. Was your original script, the +3.25 OK or were you having problemss? If so, what were they?

ellis22@gmail.com - 10 Mar 2006 20:51 GMT I can see using my 3.25L 3.50R pair but I am straining using them, when these worked before chirstmas I could still take them off and see clearly 6ft infront of me, now I cannot, that's how much of a jump it has changed, i'm nearly blind without them now.

That's an unreliable way to decide if your glasses are "right".
You need retesting.

CatmanX - 11 Mar 2006 04:04 GMT What you see without your glasses is not really relevant to the script. If you are fine with the +3.25, then leave it at that.

ellis22@gmail.com - 11 Mar 2006 11:22 GMT Hi,
My eyes strain with +3.25 with near close work.
Ellis.
CatmanX - 11 Mar 2006 11:41 GMT At 21, you may have accommodative insufficiency and need eye excercises, you may need a slightly higher script. See a behavioural optom. Check out www.covd.org
good luck

Thanks for the link.

Dr. Leukoma - 11 Mar 2006 12:37 GMT Ellis,
What did you mean when you said you couldn't focus without drops? Also, I find it more than a little odd that this came on so suddenly. Are your eyes red and irritated?
DrG
ellis22@gmail.com - 11 Mar 2006 18:46 GMT The drops relxed my eyes and could use the +5.50, without the drops my eyes strain.
Here's my symptoms:
Eyes get red yes, there's red lines in them.
When looking close at something then looking at something in the distance it's blurred.
Increase in floaters and flashes I never had before.
Double vision when viewing at the side of my eye, then turning forward to it still double, look away and back to normal image.
This happend just before christmas and still have these symptoms.
Ellis.
CatmanX - 11 Mar 2006 21:23 GMT > Eyes get red yes, there's red lines in them. Could be eyestrain, could be dry eye from blinking less.
> When looking close at something then looking at something in the > distance it's blurred. At 21, it sounds like accommodative problems by not refocussing quickly back to distance. It may be suggestive of a need for stronger glasses of excercises.
> Increase in floaters and flashes I never had before. Not related to the focussing problems, most likely coincidental. The flashes are the vitreous pulling on the retina, the floaters are bits of tissue that have pulled away from the retina.
> Double vision when viewing at the side of my eye, then turning forward > to it still double, look away and back to normal image. Not getting a focus lock. May be convergence issues as well.
> This happend just before christmas and still have these symptoms. Then it's time to get it fixed. You really need a comprehensive examination. I would wsnt t get a full evaluation on your focussing and convergence systems as well as looking at your prescription.

The Real Bev - 14 Mar 2006 05:32 GMT > Hi all I recently posted this on another forum for help, was wondering > if I could get any kind advice here. [quoted text clipped - 8 lines] > +2.00, I can no longer do up close stuff anymore and I get frequent > eyestrain everyday now. Huh? Here's my glasses prescription:
R +3.50 -2.25 95 L +5.25 -2.75 80 +2.25 for reading.
and I've had this much difference since 1978, when I started wearing glasses. They work perfectly well.
Why wouldn't the optometrist make similar glasses? What does "too much" mean?
