Any tests for NAION?

Hi,
I'm 37 and have always had one eye with really good vision and one not
so good. Never worn glasses and have never really had any problems
without them.

I started using Kamagra (Viagra derivative) 6-7 months ago and have now
noticed that i have to focus a lot more, night vision and lights make
things more difficult and my eyesight generally has deteriorated.

I have read that Viagra can cause NAION (nonarteritic anterior ischemic
optic neuropathy) in certain people. I have a small heart murmur (mitral
valve prolapse) and have read that there may be a link between Viagra,
heart disease patients and NAION although it has not been 100% proven.

It may be total coincidence, but as i have an eye test booked to get
glasses/ contacts, I wondered how i would go about being tested for NAION.

Many Thanks

Paul

There are a number of tests that help diagnose naion:
visual acuities
visual fields
pupil testing
color testing
fundus exam of the optic nerve

I wouldn't lose any sleep yet, your visual changes may
just be normal refractive changes. I am not entirely
convinced with the relationship of optic neuropathy
and viagra.

Thanks for your advice Frank. I suspect you're right. Are any of these
tests the sort of thing i could ask for during my standard eye test?
PS I'm already colour blind

They're all pretty standard.

If the doctor knows you're looking for optic nerve problems, he might order
a more thorough visual field.

The "color" test would be done differently, but you can do this yourself.
"Color blindness" like yours is almost always the same in both eyes. Optic
neuropathy is seldom the same in both eyes, and red is usually affected
first, more than other colors. So pick out a small object with colored
bright, primary red, and make sure it's the same shade of red in each eye.
In optic nerve disease, one eye often sees red as pale and washed-out, like
$1.00 worth of red in one eye, and "50 cents worth" in the eye with optic
nerve compromise.

I agree with Dr. Frank. The group of people who take Viagra are the same
group who tend to get NAION, and the incidence isn't all that different with
Vitamin V.

Thanks for the info. I'm in the UK but i assume all tests are pretty
standard. I think i'll mention it to him all the same just for peace of
mind and see if there's a quick check he can do.

i was given a visual field test which she also said was ok

Hey, that's good to hear. Did she
find any refractive changes that
explained your blur symptoms?

She di find refrective changes and prescribed glasses.
My figures were -1.25 in the right eye and -0.5 in the left with
astigmatism in both.
They tell me that it is only a relatively mild prescription.

It is a mild prescription and it should take care of
your original symptoms (especially driving @ night).

I wonder if the viagra is causing your eyes to become drier and thusly
affecting your vision.
