CR-39 lenses is fine by me...

I have a strong Rx -15 with astigmatism. I had 1.6 index glasses. I had a
problem with the anti reflection coating and got the lenses replaced a year
later but something was wrong. These lenses had nearly no fringing and lower
distortion in the corner. I figured they came out with some new high Abbe
material. it was awesome!

A year after that, I went in to have my eyes checked because the inside
coating was scratched. I figured I'd get my Rx updated with the new lenses.
I tried this 1.66 index material. When I got my glasses, it was like tunnel
vision. Rx seemed perfect in the center, but only a few degrees off axis,
every thing blurred into a rainbow of color. Monochromatic light sources
like LEDs were still sharp of axis, so the lenses seemed aligned. It was the
intense color fringing of this high index material.

I told them this is horrid. I can't wear these! They worked with the lab and
after a few days determined that the lenses that replaced the scratched ones
before were CR-39. Another week later I got my glasses. Beautiful vision!
with some creative non invasive grinding, the lenses are not much thicker
than the 1.66 index material. $150 less too. I'll never sacrifice my vision
just to have thinner looking lenses again.

I read that high index lens increase the chromatic aberration. Reason
why high index is so popular is many people are vain and hate their
cokebottle glasses and also the weight of them pressing on their nose.
Many people do get by fine with high index though. -15 is indeed an
extremely strong pescription. I am curious what one with this
pescription can see without glasses. How far can you count fingers? Can
you see well enough to walk around your house without glasses without
bumping into anything? How well do you see with your cr-39 glasses with
its 30% minification?(2% per diopter) 20/30? 20/40?

Without glasses, I can still see/recognize objects. They are just quite
fuzzy with no detail. I'd estimate I could count fingers at 6 feet. With my
old glasses, I could see in the 20/35 range, but my new ones are definitely
better. I have small frames, so the lens is not too heavy. At the thickest
point it is 1/2" thick. It would be even thicker, but has been ground down a
bit.

Accroding to my diopter chart, youd be somewhere at 20/2400 but may be
a little worse such as 20/3000! How far should I be able to count
fingers with my -4 pescription if you can count 6 feet(which I doubt) I
can only CF from 12 feet at -4! Your UCVA is about 8 times worse than
mine(im 20/400) Hey you can try this, take your glasses off and see if
you can count your own fingers with your arm outstretched. Try holding
your fingers in the air then try holding it next to the wall. How much
stronger are your new glasses than old? I correct to 20/30 with -4.5
glasses(for left eye) my right eye needs -3.5 and corrects a little
worse. Both eyes have astigmastim, worse in the right.

left eye: -4.5 sphere, -.75 cylindar(140 axis) correctable to 20/30
right eye: -3.5 sphere, -1.5 cylindar(55 axis) correctable to 20/40

I can often see some of the 20/25 line in the better left eye and
especially with both eyes open. My astigmastim, high order aberrations
and spectacle minification prevent me from achieving 20/20. Your
glasses minify more so you mentioned you were in the 20/35 range. Your
new glasses may get you to 20/30. Contacts may get you to 20/25 or even
20/20 because they dont minify.

I can count my fingers with my eyes closed.  Where does that put me on
your "diopter" chart?

My wife has 20/50 vision without correction?  Where does that put her on
your "diopter" chart?

You are memorizing your fingers analogious to me memorizing the letter
E with my eyes closed. Try actually seeing it! As for your wife, if
shes myopic it would be -1.25 diopters if she corrects to 20/20. If
shes got astigmastim, take the spherical equivalent. If shes hyperopic,
then it depends on accomodation. It could be other factors such as
cateracts or neurological diseases. You didnt specify anything except
her 20/50 vision. If we are to assume shes myopic and correctable to
20/20, shes -1.25
