Lump on my eyeball...

Hi all,

Not sure if this is the best group to ask about this but I really need
some help so I thought I'd ask.

I've been battling dry eyes for about 1.5 years now.  I'm 26 and I work
in an airconditioned environment and use a computer for most of the
day.
Even when I wake up in the morning my eyes feel dry - as well as after
having a shower.

My left eye gives me the most pain - it feels like I have something
stuck in there.
It gets so bad that I can't stop blinking when its particularly
agitated. I've noticed that I have a small circular lump (about a mm
wide) on this eye on the white part - half way between the pupil and my
nose.  I think this is what is causing me to think there is something
stuck in my eye.  I've also had yellowish deposits in the white areas
of both eyes for as long as I can remember.

Has anyone got any ideas as to what this might be and how I can treat
my dry eye condition?
I've tried a variety of drops, gels at night, gels for day, even a
steroid one - FML, and none have given me relief (FML did work a
little, I only used it for a week and it doesn't really help the cause,
just the pain)

I've seen an eye specialist who pretty much just took my money and did
no testing at all  - he just blamed my airconditioned environment
(wasn't happy with him at all). There must be more to this as why do my
eyes feel drty when waking up, driving even not at work... and there is
no aircon during these times.  Also, I worked at this job for 2 years
before these symptoms arose so why now?

Desperate for some help on this one... anything...

The lump is not the original cause of your problems but is an effect.
The feeling that something is in your eye is probably not due to the
lump (pinguecula) but the dryness affecting the cornea.

Do you have any auto-immune conditions like
arthritis/lupus/sarcoidosis/crohn's/irritable bowel/ etc ?

Certainly the airconditioning is a big part of your problem... but can
you do anything about it - maybe not.

You say you worked at the job for two years before the symptoms appeared
- OK so you need to try & think of what has changed in your life at the
same time as your symptoms appeared?
e.g.
change in workload or working hours
change in computer screen or ergonomic setup
change in airconditioning
change in your health
change in your diet
change in weather
etc, etc.

If you can think of anything that coincides with the increase in
dryness, this might help you narrow it down.

Also, copied from a previous post of mine:

"Try:
drinking lots of water
drinking less caffeine & alcohol
eating tuna/salmon/sardines or fish oil capsules regularly
stopping smoking
not using eye make-up
eyelid hygiene (google blepharitis treatment)
blinking more
avoiding airconditioning at home and in the car
avoiding dusty/windy dry environments
avoiding staring at computers, books, TVs, etc
blinking more often
wear wraparound sunglasses outside
try different types of drops including 'gels'

If you have an autoimmune condition such as arthritis it can be a
difficult and ongoing battle. "

Thanks for your time in your answer Dom, greatly appreciated.

I don't believe I have any autoimmune conditions (well at least any I
know of).
I do have beta thal minor though.

My work environment hasn't really changed. I've even tried moving desks
to see if that helped but no real success with that. As you say above,
can't really do much for the aircon.

The closest I can think of arthritis is I did get a knee injury a
couple of years ago (kicked the ground at full power while playing
soccer - shattered a piece of my articular cartlidge. It grew back but
a frond of cartlidge stuck into the middle of my knee and once a month
I would put it on a certain angle and a sharp pain (and swelling) would
result.  Had all that bad cartlidge cut out about 1.5yrs ago via
arthroscope. Took a while to heal, my knee is now much better but still
probably never going to be 100%.

I also had my eyes tested - they were found to be slightly astigimatic.
I bought glasses but they didn't help, even made things worse. I then
went and got the prescription checked by a different optometrist and
after secretly testing me 4 times on each eye, he found I had no
astigmatism.  I'm now getting them converted to reading type glasses
instead (my long range vision is excellent so I don't need glasses for
that).  Will be getting them in a few days.  Hopefully they help -
especially to cut all the glare (I am pretty sensitive to it,
especially when my eyes start getting sore).

Thanks!
