hi,

i have a mydriasis

- should we take some precautions when we have mydriasis ?(example :
sunglasses, etc.)
- is there some risk for the eye ?

thanks

Do you mean one eye, or both? Newly discovered, or old and longstanding?

"Mydriasis" usually refers to abnormal, artificially enlarged pupils as a
result of disease or medications.

"Large pupils" are common in young people, usually equal in both eyes.

About one person out of four normally have one pupil at least 0.25 mm larger
than the other.

Aside from the risk of an undiagnosed medical condition, not really.
Sunglasses and hats with brims are recommended for everybody in full
sunlight.

thanks for reply

the two eyes are dilated (a little)but one eye (left) is more dilated
than the other, and i discorvered this problem 3 days ago

the origine is probably pharmacological, i am in benzodiazepine
withdrawal and have photosensibility (the mydriasis appear after a
little bright light, someone make a photocopy in front of me)

the last IRM (two month ago) was normal

i read some paper about glaucoma risk after mydriasis but i dont know
what i shoould think about it and the real significication of this
paper :
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?cmd=Retrieve&db=PubMed&list_uids=9
375589&dopt=Abstract

is this risk real ?
What are the other possible problem ?

thanks

sunglasses helps with huge pupils that wont constrict. unequal pupils?
If the difference between the two is noticable I would be worried and
see a doctor immediately! If they lose their round shape, even more
scary! I have naturally large pupils but they shrink in bright light

The risk is real, but only for those who have their eyes artificially
dilated for eye examinations. That's several times greater than any
mydriasis you might experience in drug withdrawal.

I'm not aware of any angle closure attacks attributed to oral drugs. It
might happen with drugs that produce HUGE pupils, like LSD, but it would be
awfully rare. I don't think there are *any* drugs that produce such huge
pupils *during withdrawal*.

I don't find mydriasis listed as an effect of benzodiazepine withdrawal. On
the other hand, anxiety is a frequent effect..

Anxiety and other emotional states can make the pupils dilate, but to my
knowledge, angle closure has never been found as a result of this "ordinary"
pupil dilation. So your risk of angle closure is about zero.

Many normal people have one pupil a little larger than the other. It goes
unnoticed until you have a reason to look carefully.

thanks for the reply,

it is not commun, but
i  have the confirmation that it is a benzodiazepine withdrawal side
effect
(i have the confirmation from two specialist, + a neurologist and
neuro-ophtalmologist)

http://www.benzo.org.uk/

(see "symptom")

the mydriasis is different during the day,
usually it is not very strong, but the eye can be more dilated than
usual

question :
i was in the north of my country Monday (a city in the front of the
sea), and it was a sunny day
(i take sunglasses whan i was outside, but during some moment i was
without sunglasses (few time, 10 minutes or 5, dont remember)

is there some risk ?

thanks

i used Refresh the last months
(the ophtalmologist said i have dry eye, but today i am not certain)

can this drop cause a mydriasis ?

Thanks

No. There are no dilating ingredients in Refresh.

I don't think a few minutes of sunlight would matter much.
