Would you really take money from them?
My OD told me a story. A guy came in, with a one-day disposal contact.
He had been wearing it for a year. My OD talked to him, but he wouldn't
listen. My OD decided that if he was that far out of compliance, maybe
he wouldn't be honest on the witness stand, either. If he got a corneal
ulcer, he might testify that my OD told him it was OK to wear that lens
for a year. My OD would present the medical chart as evidence that he
had warned the patient. The patient would claim that my OD wrote that
chart right before the trial. No witnesses, one claim against another.
My OD explained that sometimes juries tend to take the side of the
patient, if it isn't clear. My OD told the guy he wasn't his patient,
to leave and don't ever come back. He couldn't afford the guy.
I can't blame him.

I think that's an extreme case of a common attitude today. The reality
is that 1. the guy probably won't get and ulcer (believe it or not I
have a patient who is a pediatric cardiologist who wears 1 days lenses
30 days at a time, the cheapskate). 2. If he does get an ulcer, if the
doc's records are properly date/time stamped, he's pretty immune (plus
if he really thinks something could become an issue, he just has a staff
person, or better yet, the patient himself) witness his advice against
it in the record as well. 3. He may be steering the patient into a
worse situation through abandonment, something he *could* conceivably
get sued for.
Anyway, yes, I would take $50 to fill out a survey, even from otis or
ace. I know they won't sue me and maybe they'd learn something (for a
change). Remember, you get what you pay for, and they ain't been paying
for much around these parts lately...
Anyway, gotta go do some serious celebrating with friends and
relatives... Merry Christmas to all
