sudden astig degredation?

After decades of fairly stable cyl (around -1d, mirrored ax), why would
cyl suddenly almost double (with sph and axis still stable)?   stress?
disease?  bad habits?  more astig to come? thx

"Double" sounds alarming. "-100 to -175" doesn't sound so unusual, if you
allow for +/-025 observer variance and +/-025 diurnal variation.

Thanks, it WAS 3/4 diop increase.  Now appears the exam was taken at a
"false recovery" moment during an extended flu-like illness, that had
eyes feeling whacko except for the couple days around exam.  I'm
guessing the real, healthy-mode degradation of astig is only .2 to .4
diopter.
