I have had a cold for about a week. A couple of days ago I developed a
blemish under my eye. It made the skin under my eye puffy. A day later I
developed a cold sore on my lip. I didn't associate the two at first but
began to wonder if the eye problem was herpes. I searched the web but
didn't find much information - only that herpes is the leading cause of
blindness in the US. This definitely got my attention. I have occasional
lip herpes and have never had it in any other location. The blemish below
the eye was quite small and formed a tiny scab on it. I originally scraped
off the scab and put some hydrogen peroxide on to keep it clean. It is just
below the eye lashes with a second red spot about a quarter inch below that.
If this is herpes what should I do? I suspect it's not a problem unless it
gets into the eye but it is very close. Is there any preventive action I
can take? If this is herpes will it be obvious if there is eye involvement?
Thanks for any help.

The blindness associated with herpes comes from scars secondary to
herpes simplex keratitis, or herpes infection of the cornea. You would
know if you had a corneal infection if the eye became red and you
started to experience a foreign body sensation or decrease in vision.
It does indeed appear that you may have a herpetic lesion on the
eyelid. You may wish to see an eye doctor who may prescribe an
antiviral medication. More than 90% of all cases of herpes simplex are
due to recurrences.

see your family doctor. if these are herpetic lesions on your face
then your doctor will likely put you on oral antiherpetic medicines
such as acyclovir, famvir or valtrex. these medicines will aid in the
healing of the skin lesions and shorten the infection time. if your
eye starts to get red or irritated then see your doctor again--
preferably an eye doctor. then an eye drop might be in order if it
becomes clear that the eye is becoming infected. its best to head
herpes infections off quickly-- once the spread and become established
they are harder to control and cause secondary consequences.

Thanks so much for the responses. I was pretty worried because I really
didn't know if I had a potential problem or not. I am now fairly sure that
it is herpes. I didn't have a chance to get to the doctor today and the eye
lesion is still quite red but also seems fairly dry and less puffy and the
lip sore is shrinking. I started on an OTC ointment as soon as the lip
problem showed up and I think it has had a good effect. At this point there
is no problem with the actual eye. Since healing seems to be taking place,
should I still try to see my doctor or just wait and address the problem the
next time I see him? I hate to bother him needlessly. I also wonder if
the problem is likely to recur near the eye now that this has happened once.
Thanks again.
