Red Eyes : Shopping Malls / Public Places (PLEASE HELP)

Everytime I step out of the house, and into a shopping mall, or any
public place for that matter, my eyes become 'very dry' and 'red'.
I've seen the doctors, tried every possible thing and can't think of
what else to do.

The only eye drops that work are  :

1 - Visine Allergy (but only for 1 hour, using too often makes them
even more dry)
2 - Refresh Liquigel (lubrication, doesn't stop redness though)

I don't wear contacts, and normally at home my eyes are perfect, with
mild dryness, but comfortable.

*** UNCONVENTIONAL METHODS

Out of desperation I've tried unconventional methods.  Perhaps it will
point some medical professional in the right direction for a cure :

Marijuana : Smoking for 1-2 weeks chronically helps the eyes quite a
bit, but this is not a solution for me as the euphoria is too strong.
Although it does help alot.

Ecstacy (MDMA) : Works the best.  Sounds crazy, but while the pupils
are dilated, my eyes never get dry or red.  I don't understand why.

****

Any ideas why this occurs, and how I can stop this problem ?  I can't
seem to fix this dry/eye problem.  I have seen all the doctors, and all
they say is use this drops, but nothing really works long term.

LOL isnt this ironic "illegal" drugs actually benefit you? This is
something that the world should consider. They have medicial uses.
Ritalin is an illegal drug but is used to combat ADHD. MDMA could be
used to combat your dry eyes.

Other than drugs, see a doctor about your dry eye problem and ask for
plugs

Unfortunately MDMA is not an option.  That was just something I
experimented with in University.

Also, I have seen numerous doctors and it's always the same archaic
diagnos, "You have dry eyes, try these drops, here's a coupon."

There has to be something more to this problem than eye drops.  I'm
guessing eye pressure, blood flow etc.  Anyone overcome this problem ?

I just read about the dry eye plugs.  Looks interesting.  Anyone have
experience with this type of method ?

Yeah, me.

First, they plug the lower lids (puncta).  Then they plug the upper
lids.  If all that goes well, but your eyes are still dry (that's me,
too), they cauterize all the puncta.

At this point, no tears can drain from your eyes (only evaporate).

You should also look for a product called Lacrisert.

OR http://www.merckfrosst.ca/e/products/lacrisert/home.html

Agreed on the fish oil caps.  Take flax seed oil caps, too.

Many people have good luck with Systane or Soothe drops.  Also, at
night, try Genteal Dry Eye Lube.  Makes waking up easier.

Last: definitely see an eye doctor.  They may try you on Restasis ...
which could solve your problem.

Good luck.

Try:
drinking lots of water
drinking less caffeine & alcohol
eating tuna/salmon/sardines or fish oil capsules regularly
stopping smoking
not using eye make-up
eyelid hygiene (google blepharitis treatment)
blinking more
avoiding airconditioning at home and in the car
avoiding dusty/windy dry environments
avoiding staring at computers, books, TVs, etc
blinking more often
wear wraparound sunglasses outside
try different types of drops including 'gels'

If you have an autoimmune condition such as arthritis it can be a
difficult and ongoing battle.

You've just eliminated my entire life...
I do wear wraparound sunglasses though. :)

So VA really doesn't work. Don't use it.

If lubrications make them feel better, use them often.

This is counter intuitive, as one of the most common signs of MJ smoking
is red eyes.  Could it be the the MJ is the primary cause of your problem?

Probably a vessel constricting property.  Dangerous.  Stop using it.

Are you sure you've seen "all the doctors"?  Nobody has suggested warm
moist compresses with lid and lash scrubs?  Sounds like you've not yet
gone to an optometrist, or if you did, not a very good one.

---------------------------------

I've had this condition far before MJ and far after MJ use.   MJ
modifies the
eye pressure, that's why the first few times people get red eyes.  Over
time
it actually produces a healthier eyes.  It's also used to treat
Glaucoma.
Too bad it doesn't come in pill form, otherwise the results were
actually
quite positive.

QUOTE : "In the early 1970s, scientists discovered that smoking
marijuana reduced pressure in the eyes. Exactly how the cannabinoids in
marijuana produce this effect isn't known."

Actually, let me jump in and correct you there.  Tomorrow--if all goes
according to schedule--I pick up my first supply of Marinol--"a
synthetic version of a naturally occurring compound known
as delta-9-THC."

http://www.marinol.com/patient_care.html

My eye problems--and the associated meds I've taken for them--have
left me damned nauseous.  The anesthesiologist has prescribed this
drug to treat the nausea.  Luckily, I'm very physically active, or I'd
surely get fat ;-)

I used to love to (very occasionally) smoke pot, and would, still,
but--at least in my case--it *does* make my dry eyes worse.  I'll let
you know if the pill form has a different result....

Thanks... All !!

I got permanent punctal plugs (the ones that expand with heat).  I'm
cured !!  I can't believe that I went through 12++ years with this
problem.

I just did my christmas (holiday) shopping, without any red eyes.  My
eyes feel 100x better overall.  I can even sit in front of the fire
place without having dry eyes.  My eyes are as white as a babies and
super healthy now.

Thanks !!!
