Problem with left eye

I am myopic, with ~ -5.00 diopters left eye, ~ -4.50 diopters right eye.

One year ago I developed a strange problem on my left eye:

I see a spherical distortion with my left eye as follows:
http://www.virtualcomposer2000.com/Misc/VisionProblem.gif

Looking at the central red dot of the right grid, my right eye perceives the
right grid, as it is.
My left eye however, perceives the right grid, as it appears on the left
side.

The drawing is slightly exaggerated but I do see a bowed vertical line, so
the distortion appears to be against the horizontal axis only.

After becoming aware of this, I went to my ophthalmologist and had a full
eye exam. I had both an external eye test and a retina/eye pressure test
with anesthetic.

He found no problems with my lens, retina or eye pressure. (all came up
normal).

He said that this is a common condition caused by stress at around the age
of 40 (my age), with some cones and rods becoming slightly "bent" on certain
areas of the retina, similar to how the wool threads of a carpet can be
"bent" after being stepped upon. I don't remember what he called the
condition.

He did suggest that I have a Fluoroangiogram, which I did not have, however.

The distortion isn't very obvious when I am looking at wide images, but it
becomes more pronounced when I read or look at details.

It's been one year and some months since I developed it. Does this condition
ever go away? Is it dangerous? Can it be corrected using laser surgery?

Thanks much in advance,

Getting old isn't all fun but it beats the alternative.

I'm 60 and have noticed a similar effet for about five years.
I'm diaganosed type II diabetic. Keeping that under control and staying
in good physical condition seems to help.

I'm not an ophthalmologist but I've had this condition.  It's called
Idiopathic Central Serious Retinopathy if you aren't already aware of
that.  Google will turn up a lot of info.

Mine mostly went away in a few months, though I don't think it ever completely
cleared up.

I would suggest you do have a retinal expert check it out though, for
piece of mind if nothing else.

Good call, Sam.  Central Serous Retinopathy seems to be on the
increase, and there is a very important stress component to it.  The
hormone that we produce when we are stressed is called cortisol, and
high cortisol levels can really do a number on your retinal vessels.
If you have read about cortisol in the media recently, it has also been
determined to be the culprit that makes stress eaters gain weight
around their middle much more than in their hips or thighs.

Exercise and stress reduction are an important part of cortisol
control.

I have a similar problem with the right eye, though in my case
the central 'wobbles' are horizontal rather than vertical.

After thorough examination the effect was diagnosed as the
result of a slightly crinkled, transparent, 'epi-retinal membrane'

I'd also see a neurosurgeon. It could be a problem in the image
processing computer (aka brain) and that should be ruled out.

I think that's being a bit extreme.  It fit the symptoms of a common
disorder, in the expected location, diagnosed by an ophthalmologist.

And, a neurosurgeon wouldn't be the type of physician who I'd recommend.
If he does want to take it to the next level, see a specializt in
retinal disorders.

Standard disclaimers apply.
