Hi,
I have been diagnosed by a retina specialist with Macular Degeneration of
one eye.  I have been treated by Visudyne Therapy and an injection of
Avastin.  It will be repeated every 3 months about 4 times.  My central
vision with that eye is almost gone.
Has anyone had any luck with 20+ mg Lutein + Zeaxanthin + a lot of green
vegs kale etc?
The doctor does not object to the vitamins but doubts that I can improve the
central vision of that eye.  He indicated that he hopes the treatment with
prevent it from spreading.  The other eye is fine.
Any comments will be appreciated.

Having received PDT and Avastin together means that you are involved
with a doctor who is providing you with state-of-the-art and absolutely
the most cutting edge research treatment for MD.

The concept of nutritional supplementation with the AREDS
vitamin/mineral combination (which includes zinc, C, E, beta carotene as
well as lutein and copper) is an excellent idea-----to perhaps decrease
the risks of MD for the other eye. (As is eating all those fresh
veggies!) Depending upon the degree of damage to the MD eye, you might
experience some recovery of vision and there is a good chance it will
keep it from declining further.

I hope you do well with treatment.

Thank you so much for the guidance.  Any comment on the 45 mg Lucein +
Zeaxanthin is appreciated.

The vitamins/diet may help slow progression of ARMD in the affected eye and
may help prevention in the other eye.  It will not reverse any damage
already done and will not improve vision.   The Visudyne/ Avastin therapy is
much more effective than diet in preventing further loss of vision.

Are you a smoker?   The single most important modifiable risk factor for
ARMD is smoking, quitting smoking has about 10X the effect of adding
vitamins.

I am 47 years old and have mac. deg. in both my eyes.  My left eye was
diagnosed 10 yrs. ago and a few years ago in my right eye.  I had traditional
laser treatments for my left eye, because at that time PDT (visudyne therapy)
was only in the trial stages.  When it happened in my right eye, I had the
PDT.  It's been about one year and I am seeing slightly better than before it
hit that eye. Was is the therapy or the vitamins and herbal supplements?   I
take Ocuvite preservision and also standardized bilberry extract.

Hi Carol,
Thanks for the info.  I am 76 and have Wet MG in the one eye and I am
searching for info.
If you don't mind with both eyes in trouble how do you handle the computer
keyboard and screen?  I do wish you the best.

Since my vision has greatly improved, I have no problem seeing the computer
screen or keyboard.  But before my right eye got better, I had seen a low
vision specialist and was given low vision aids, magnifiers, lamps with
magnification, CCTV, etc.  This was available to me through the Blind and
Visual Services in my area.  Everything was free.  At my worst, I was unable
to read a newspaper, phone book, and even had problems seeing the tv.  Now I
can read all that.  My left eye was 20/100 about a year ago, it is now 20/25
almost 20/20.  I believe the Photodynamic Therapy was extremely helpful.  I
am even back to driving now.
