Dear Reader,

Before you consider paying attention to anything that Otis Brown
(otisbrown@pa.net) writes, I invite you to review all of his  previous
posts.

Not only is there no scientific data on humans to support his fantasy,
but there IS plenty that proves him wrong.

Otis gets the basis of his warped, disproved ideas from concepts
written a century ago and one study done on CHICKENS!

Any of you folks chickens ?

Otis Brown is more than simply bizarre.  He's wrong. See the weekly
(Mondays)  "welcome to sci.med.vision" for information on  how to
block his ramblings.

If you can find a shred of evidence or scientifically accepted proof
of the efficacy of using plus lens therapy to prevent  the progression
of myopia in humans then, by all means, follow his advice, but do so
only under the care of a licensed  optometrist or ophthalmologist.

"Scientifically accepted proof" results from experiments conducted
within the "scientific method" explained here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scientific_method

Otis's posts tend to fall into the category of anecdotal (or made up):

Otis's posts can be reviewed at:

The results of clinical trials of using plus lens therapy to prevent
the progression of myopia can be found at (hint: it did not work):

The details of a proper, controlled test have been proposed and can be
reviewed at the following site, beginning with Page 40, Section 7(A)
and continuing through Page 42:

The remainder of this text
(http://books.nap.edu/books/0309040817/html) provides significant
information as well.  Nothing contained within supports Otis's theory.
Much, in fact, directly contradicts it.

Dear Neil and Bev,

Suggestion -- why not just copy Neil's rant into your weekly "message".
I certainly think that is a good idea.

It will save us all some "band-width".

Best,

Otis

Otis,

You are the single biggest waste of bandwidth I have ever seen on the
Internet.

You want to be a part of the solution?  Screw off.  Stop posting here.
Go back to your Yahoo group and continue your evangalization.  Others
have suggested additional forums where you can rule the roost to your
heart's content.

You don't fit here.  You don't talk science.  You talk $hit.

Screw off, Otis.  You'll save enormous bandwidth.

Dear Neil,

I would never restrain your right to "post" -- and refuse to
have Bev put your "message" in her message.  Why  not?

Most people reading these discussions about science
and the proof that the natural eye is a dynamic system,
can sort out what they what to do for themselves.

Why to YOU assume that YOU know what is BEST
for them.  Do you think they are stupid or something?

How about it Bev, can you copy Neils "rant" into your
weekly post?

If an OD or MDs sits down with my parents -- and has them
check my "reading habits", and recommends that I
get my nose off that book -- then I think that would be a
WISE thing to do -- as  a first step.

If he further SUGGESTED the use of a strong plus -- at that
point -- dependent on my "acceptance" of that plus -- then
THAT WOULD BE A WISE STEP.

If he stated that he would charge for his PROFESSIONAL TIME
then I WOULD GLADLY PAY FOR THAT TIME -- IT WOULD
BE WORTH IT.

If I asked WNY I HAD TO WEAR THE PLUS IN THIS MANNER -- then
most of the answer is in respecting the natural eye as
a dynamic system -- and all the that implies.

This analysis suggests the need for an EDUCATED PARENT,
and these parents could begin to understand these issues
by reviewing the science of the natural eye's behavior.

It is time for basic change in our attitudes towards
true-prevention.

Now, Neil, could you explain EXACTLY how you plan
to warn parents about this issue?

Best,

Otis

Then, if the parent asked for evidence that plus lenses worked, I would
what....refer them to your website?  If in 6 weeks the child had
complained that the plus lenses made his vision worse and the parents
took him to another doctor, and that doctor found the child had become
more nearsighted, should I then ask them to call you?

No.  I would call that A FOOLISH STEP.

You're a sick old man, Otis.  We all feel badly that you became myopic
and that your dream of one day flying planes got shattered.

That doesn't, however, lend a shred of truth to what it is you spew.

You believing it unwaveringly doesn't make it so ("often wrong, but
never in doubt.")

Your repeating it ad infinitum doesn't make it so.

The fact that overwhelming scientific evidence disagrees with you
can't penetrate your skull.

You need help.  You need psychological help.

Seriously.
