I am a project manager for a construction company. I view things at a
distance andalso must look at small details on plans and specs. I also spend
time on the computer every day. I would like to know what Progressive lense
is the best for me. I have a strong prescription +800 or so. but only need a
200 add for close up. Can someone help me know the difference in the various
Varilux lenses as that is what seems to be pushed by all the optical
companies here in Houston Texas where I live. Thanks Bob
I don't think any are. I'm currently trying to fit a progressive on a
+8.00 physical therapist, and it is on the very upper limit of
availability for any progressive. If you must, you might go with a
Younger brand which have the 8 base curves, but I'd much rather see you
in a normal "D" style bifocal with a 28 mm seg. That will get you about
3x as much reading area as the best progressive, and much less
peripheral distortions. With progressives you're going to be constantly
trying to find that tiny little "sweet spot" of near vision...

Stacy Thanks for your imput! I may have misspoke about my prescription. My
actual prescription is O.d.-8.25 w/ +1.00Cyl and a 138-7 axis O.S.-8.25 W/ +1.
5Cyl and a 046 Axis My O.D. says I need a +2.00Add in each eye. Before I said
I had a +8 vision I meant -8. Does your recomendation still follow? Thanks
for your help. Bob P.S What is a example of an 8 base curve lense? My O.D. is
suggesting I try Varilux Panamic I am of the opinion that I need something
with a higher sweet spot for close up.

Bob,
I have Various Panamics that are +1.00 add +3.25. I can tell the transition difference between a +2.00 and a +3.25 add, I don't have any problem
finding the sweet spot in the higher add lenses. I also have Various Comforts (short corridor) with a +2.50 add, those work fine.
AO used to make a Technica lens, for a lot of close work you can't beat it. Not very good for distance, it has a very small distance portion. It kind
of reminded me of a upside down progressive. There is a little sliver for distance at the extreme top.

On this side of the pond Rodenstock have introduced the Impression Hyperop
in ILt and Regular fromat in a 1.67 index Rx range is +6.00 to +13.00, adds
0.75 to 3.00 with cyls to +6.00 and prism to 4.
I'm afraid I don't know if it travels well

Thanks for that info. It turns out the original poster is actually
-8.00, or highly myopic, so my advice would change anyway. Any high
quality progressive should work ok for him. I'll see if we can get the
lens in California. BTW what is ILt vs. regular format?

Free form with cyls to 6.00? You guys always get the good stuff before us (US).
Rodenstock isn't doing to well here so I wonder if we will ever get it. I hope
I'm wrong because off hand I can think of three clients in the last month who
would have benefited from this technology.
