My Mother suffers from Glaucoma but is allergic to the preservative
(Benzalkonium Chloride) present in Cosopt and Alphagan two of the drugs
which have in the past been very effective in reducing the pressure.
The ophthalmologist prescribed the drug Betoptics which is free of a
preservative however, this does not reduce the pressure sufficiently.
The optic nerve has already been damaged by high pressure and the
ophthalmologist this week suggested going back to Cosopt in an attempt
to reduce the pressure below 20. This has resulted in a very violent
allergic reaction.
Please would someone let us know what alternative options there are?

Your mother's doctor needs to sort this out. However, Alphagan P is
available, it is Alphagan with Purite instead of BAK as a preservative.
Some people are sensitive to the drugs themselves, not just the
preservative.
